Mattern, a prominent and well known person in this and adjoining counties and a resident of Tyrone for the past twenty-eight years, died at his home, 241 East Tenth street, yesterday morning at 10.40 o'clock, after an illness of two years' duration. The past four months he was confined to his home, afflicted with a complication of diseases. The deceased was a son of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Mattern and was born at the Seven Stars, Franklin township, Huntingdon county, December 11, 1842, and at death was aged 57 years, 2 months and 5 days. At Rock Springs, Centre county, February 9, 1871, he was united in marriage to Miss Annie M. Gardner. He was a lifelong active and faithful member of the English Lutheran church, filling all the prominent official stations in the church and its auxiliary branches with an earnest devotion to his calling and duties as he understood them and to the satisfaction of his co-laborers. Mr. Mattern had been until within three or four years ago, engaged in mercantile pursuits, after which until compelled by illness, to relinquish all efforts at business, he was prominently identified with accident insurance as a general agent. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Annie M. Mattern, and one daughter and two sons, viz.: Mrs. Mary Stine, wife of Dr. Thaddeus Stine, of Tyrone; Charles E. Mattern, a student at State College, and Guy Mattern, of Windber, Pa. He is also survived by his aged father, George W. Mattern, and one brother, John Stewart Mattern, both of Seven Stars, Franklin township, Huntingdon county, and one sister, Mrs. Amanda Flenner, wife of Dr. W. H. Flenner, of Tyrone. Funeral services will be held at his late home, 241 East Tenth street, Monday afternoon, February 19, at 2 o'clock, to be conducted by his pastor, Rev. F. L. Bergstresser, assisted by Rev. Albert J.
