Mattern Died at His Home on East Tenth Street after Long and Severe Suffering Albert J. Mattern died at his home, 245 East Tenth Street, at 10.40 o'clock Friday forenoon, after an illness covering a period of about two years. His affliction consisted of a complication of diseases affecting the vital organs of his system. He was aged at death 57 years, 2 months and five days. Albert J. Mattern was born at Seven Stars, in the Spruce Creek Valley, Huntingdon County, December 11, 1842. He was the son of George W. Mattern and Jane (McPherran) Mattern. He was reared to manhood at the place of his birth and was educated in the common schools of that vicinity. When a young man he went. west with a view of locating if a proper opening could be found. But inside of a year, he returned east, and after spending part of a year in the oil country of Pennsylvania he returned to Spruce Creek Valley, and conducted a mercantile business at Rock Springs, Centre County, about seven years. Twenty-eight years ago he came to Tyrone and forming a partnership with Walter L. Adams engaged in the mercantile business in the Hiller block under the firm name of Mattern & Adams. Some years later Mr. Adams withdrew and Mr. Mattern continued the business alone until about three years ago. Mr. Adams, it will be recalled, died only a year or two ago. When a young man, A. J. Mattern was married to Miss Annie M. Gardner, of near Rock Springs. Mrs. Mattern survives her husband. One daughter and two sons also survive, viz,: Mrs. Mary M. Stine, wife of Dr. T. Stine of Tyrone; Charles O., of State College, and Guy G., of Windber, Somerset County. His aged father, George W. Mattern, also survives and resides at the old homestead at Seven Stars. His Mother died a number of years ago. One sister and one brother survive also, Mrs. Dr. W. H. Flenner, of Tyrone, and John S. Mattern, of Seven Stars. Deceased was a lifelong member, of the Lutheran Church, being connected with the First Lutheran Church of Tyrone during all his residence here, always active and occupying a responsible place on the official boards of the church. He was superintendent of the Sunday school for about twenty-five years, an evidence alone of his worth and the confidence his church people had in him as a professing Christian and a Christian worker. As a citizen he was earnest and active, always taking a deep interest in the affairs of the town. Especially, he was interested in the public schools; serving on the board of directors a number of years, where he displayed unusual activity and proved a valuable official. As a citizen of the town, whose residence here was long enough to weld him to the interests of the place and make him a part of the coherent structure of citizenship, he proved himself in many ways valuable to the town. Politically, he was a lifelong Republican. Socially, he was genial, agreeable, entertaining and kindly. As husband and father, he was devoted and true to every interest of his family. The funeral occurred last Monday. Services at the late home of deceased by Reverend F. L. Bergstresser, assisted by Reverend A. J. Weisley, at 2 o'clock in the afternoon.
