Maus, an almost life-time resident of Hollidaysburg, died last Friday morning at 10 o'clock at his home at Fairfield, California, of a complication of diseases. Deceased was a son of the late Harry Maus, of Hollidaysburg, and was born here on July 1848, thus was past 71 years of age. Mr. Maus lived here all his life with the exception of the past four years, during which time he had resided in California, where he went with other members of the family to live, and was engaged with his nephew, Harry Maus, in the automobile business at Fairfield. He was a veteran clerk of Blair county, having been employed for many years in the general store of the late John H. Law on West Allegheny street, and in various clothing stores at Hollidaysburg and Altoona. He enjoyed the reputation of being one of the best fishermen of the county, being passionately fond of angling, his fishing companion being, William Barr of Allegheny street, who received word of the death of his friend yesterday. Mr. Maus never married. He is survived by three brothers and three sisters as follows: John, of Omaha; George and Westley, of Altoona; Mrs. Nettie Thompson and Miss Rebecca Maus, of Fairfield, Cal., and Lulu, of Altoona. A brother, William Maus, a former jeweler of Hollidaysburg, went west with the family and died there three months after arrival. Altoona Tribune, Monday, January 20, 1919, page 2 JOHN MAUS. It was erroneously stated in yesterday's Tribune that Silas W. Maus, a former Hollidaysburg resident, had died at his home in Fairfield, Cal., last Friday. Mr. Silas Maus is still living but his brother John Maus, who was a resident of Omaha, Neb., passed away at his home in that city that day. John Maus was born at Hollidaysburg in January, 1845, and was thus in his 74th year. He went west twenty-eight years ago, finally locating at Omaha, where he became very well known and became quite prominent. He was for fifteen years building inispector of the city and retired from that office recently only on account of ill health. He was married to Miss Rebecca Dougherty, of Hollidaysburg, who survives him with a daughter, Miss Daisy. The following brothers and sisters also survive: George, of Altoona; Wesley, of Juniata; Mrs. Lulu Aurandt, of 1125 Eighteenth avenue, Altoona; Mrs. Nettie Thompson, and Miss Rebecca Maus, of Fairfield, Cal. Before going west John was employed at the P.R.R. shops at Altoona. The deceased took a prominent part in politics at Omaha, his appointment as building inspector for fifteen consecutive years being his reward. Altoona Tribune, Tuesday, January 21, 1919, page 4
