Maxwell, aged 26 years, 9 months and 22 days. The deceased served his country faithfully for three years in the army of the Union. He was wounded twice in the seven days fight on the Peninsula, and again in the battle of Antietam, after which he was transferred from his old Reg't., the 72nd Penna. Vol's., to the veteran reserve corps and helped to defend Washington against the rebel attack in the summer attack of 1864. Several weeks before his death he made a public profession of his faith in Jesus Christ and became a member of the Reformed Church by holy Baptism and confirmation. In humble penitence and faith he committed himself to his covenant God and Savior, who graciously sustained him in his last and trying hour. As the scenes of earth faded from his view, the heavens were opened to his enraptured gaze and an innumerable multitude of angels welcomed his departing spirit to the Paradise of God. The respect shown to the deceased by the entire community, at his funeral, was gratifying to those dear friends who knew him to love him. Never was there such a vast concourse of sympathizing citizens assembled on a similar occasion in Altoona. May the Lord bless this sad bereavement to the highest good of all the friends and relatives of the deceased. "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord,, they rest from their labors." - C.
