McAteer, died suddenly about 2 o'clock Monday morning. Mr. McAteer was conductor of a freight train on the P.R.R. and was engaged in making up his train at the Asylum road crossing, in the Harrisburg yard, when the disease which terminated fatally, first attacked him. Remarking that he did not feel well, he went to the engine and had been in the cabin, but in a few moments, his spirit winged its flight to unknown realms. Deceased resided in Millville, near Altoona, where he leaves a wife and seven children. He was aged about 56 years, and had many friends and acquaintances who will be pained to learn of his sudden taking off. Huntingdon Journal, Huntingdon, Pa., January 21, 1887, page 3 RECENT DEATHS. Death came suddenly to Mr. S. A. McAteer, the well-known freight conductor, Monday morning at Harrisburg. On Sunday last he was called at half-past 2 o'clock in the afternoon to take a train to Harrisburg, and for the purpose of attending to this duty was driven from his home in Millville by his son Jonathan. He had charge of cabin crew No. 306. Harrisburg was reached without any mishaps and Mr. McAteer got on the engine with Engineer Ross, with the intention of riding to the round house, being in this manner able to do away with a considerable distance which otherwise he would have to walk. When the round house was reached the startling discovery was made that he had been summoned to appear on the locomotive. Death was the result of heart disease. Mr. McAteer was one of the oldest employes on the road, having been in its employ for twenty-seven years, during twenty of which he had been a conductor. He was 56 years of age and was held in much esteem by all who knew him. His home was at No. 3027 Oak avenue, Millville and there for many years he had resided. His wife is living and is left to mourn the death of an ever affectionate husband. He also leaves five children - Agnes, wife of William Fissel; Alice, wife of Jacob Hague; Miss Clara and Jonathan and Matthew. The children all reside in Millville, the three latter living with their parents. Mr. McAteer also leaves two brothers - Senator H. J. McAteer, of Alexandria, Huntingdon county, and Matthew McAteer, passenger agent at Long Branch. The deceased was a member of St. John's Catholic church, and also of the Brotherhood of Railroad Conductors and the Pennsylvania Railroad Relief Plan. Accompanied by his brother, Senator McAteer, the remains of the deceased were brought to Altoona on fast line Monday evening and conveyed to his late residence.
