From thence he moved with his parents (Dougal and Margaret McCartney) to the city of Philadelphia, but after a short residence in that city moved to Franklin county and about 1794 they came to Huntingdon county. Mr. McCartney was a man of very exemplary character and united with the Presbyterian Church of Hollidaysburg many years ago. Several years ago he received an injury from a fall, wherein resulted in lameness from which he never fully recovered. Notwithstanding it was with great difficulty he could travel, he delighted to attend the preaching of the gospel, gave of his means liberally to the support of the same. He delighted in prayer, loved the social prayer meeting, and assisted in establishing such meetings in destitute neighborhoods. During his last illness, which continued for several months, he was delighted to have his Pastor and Christian friends visit and pray with him. John was in the 77th year of his life. Altoona Mirror, August 29, 1981 _________________________________________________________________________ Martin L. M'CARTNEY 13 March 13, 1920 M. L. M'Cartney, 13 March 1920, Died Saturday, Aged 75 Years County Jury Commissioner, Publicist and Former School Teacher, Passes Away At Juniata Gap Home Martin L. McCartney, school teach publicist, and county official died on Saturday at his home in Juniata Gap, after six days prostration with heart trouble. The deceased was intensely emotional in spiritual temperament and his collapse is said to have followed fervent shouting at a Sunday evening church service. Mr. McCartney was 75 years of age and was a familiar figure throughout his county for over half a century. He was the son of Allen and Catherine McCartney, both long deceased, and was born in Juniata Gap on February 3, 1845. Electing to retain his home, in a long life, on his native soil, Mr. MacCartney became a school teacher, while still a young man and was one of the oldest educators in the county. He taught for many years in the public schools of Logan, Antis and Tyrone townships and in the [richlands] of Cambria county. Only last year the veteran assisted to meet the demand for teachers by coming back to the profession at the Oak Grove school, near East Altoona. His later years were, however, largely spent in county affairs. He served two terms as a member of the Blair county board of auditors and was a jury commissioner at the time of his death. While Martin MacCartney was in a sense peculiar, his standard of manhood was high, his honor untarnished. His ideals for the rising generation were high and hundreds, perhaps thousands of people in Central PA have profited by his persistent work in the schoolroom. Mr. MacCartney was famed as a speller and some years ago became the county champion at a contest held in the courthouse. He had not been known to misspell a word in the past decade, and was always a distinguishing figure at the country school spelling bees. The side that had Martin was invariably the winner. McCARTNEY July 13, 1906 Ex Coroner McCartney Dead Was the Oldest Native Altoonan Having Been Born On site of City Before There Was A Settlement Here Veteran of Civil War and Fine Old Citizen. Thomas C. McCartney, one of the best known citizens of Altoona, died at 2:55 o'clock this morning at his home, 1500 Fifteenth Avenue. Diseases incident to old age carried him away. He had been in poor health since he was run down by a engine several years ago near Allegrippus, where he had gone in the night to conduct a coronal investigation. His powerful constitution preserved by years of right living saved him from dying as a result of that terrible experience. After his recovery, he was never the same, receiving several slight strokes of paralysis. He had been confined to his home for some months. Coroner McCartney was the oldest native Altoonan residing in the city. He was born in the site of the present city before there was even a small settlement here, on July 10, 1829. He was the son of Lewis and Mary McCartney. All his life has been spent in this vicinity. His grandfather built the first log cabin at about what is now called the Cricket Field, at Seventh Street, later removing to the foot of the mountains towards Wopsenonock. Here his descendant was born, reared and spread over and around Altoona. Coroner McCartney was a tailor by occupation and was engaged in that business in his early manhood, being located at Hollidaysburg, Birmingham and Bellwood; at the later place for ten years. In 1870 he moved from Bellwood to Altoona and found employment in the Altoona shops, where he was employed for a period of twenty-five years. In 1887 he purchased the book and stationary store of G. L. Myers on Eleventh Avenue above 13th Street. He conducted the business for ten years. On June 11, 1896 he was appointed coroner by Governor D. H. Hastings to fill the unexpired term of James Foust, resigned, and later was twice elected and filled the office. In the latter part of his term he was partially incapacitated and for a time was confined to his home. Coroner McCartney came of the sterling stock of men who fought for principles and presentation of the home. His grandfather fought in the revolution. His father was captain of a military company organized to protect the early settlers from the Indians. Thomas fought in the Civil War, One hundred and Thirty Seventh regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, and in Company E, One Hundred and Fourth PA Volunteers. He participated in numerous engagements and was proud of his war record. He was a member of Post 468, Grand Army of the Republic, while he was an ideal soldier, he was also an ideal citizen. No kinder man ever lived, nor one more courteous. He was one of the old school gentlemen. He daily sought inspiration from the life of the Nazarene and followed closely in the footsteps of the man of Galilee. His civic duties received the same heart whole devotion as his religions, and during his term as coroner he never failed of doing his duty as he saw it. He led the simple life, with quiet charity and smiles and kind words. His big brave, yet tender heart bubbled over with love and sympathy for the whole world, and he goes to his reward secure in the faith sure of happiness in eternity. Mr. McCartney was a Methodist. He helped to organize the first congregation s and build the original Methodist Episcopal church in Bellwood. After removing to Altoona, he became a member of the First Methodist Episcopal Church, of which he was a member at the time of his death. He was married to Mary A. McPherran in 1859, and she preceded him to the grave on December 12, 1901. To this union were born five sons as follows; W. C. McCartney of Coalport; CF, HW, OL McCartney of Altoona and FS McCartney of Philadelphia. He is also survived by two half brothers, Martin and Jonathan Neff, residing in Illinois. Funeral services will be held at his late home, Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The services which will be public and conducted by the Rev. Horace Lincoln Jacobs, pastor of the First Methodist Church.
