Augustus McClain, a well known and prominent citizen of this town and vicinity for many years, died at the home of James Patterson, in the Bald Eagle valley, one mile northeast of Olivia station, at 1.30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, of paralysis, having been stricken on Monday, October 23, remaining in an unconscious condition until relieved by death. The subject of this notice was born near Laurelville, in Sinking Valley, March 9, 1825, and at death was aged 74 years, 7 months and 22 days. He was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic church in this place. In or about 1851 he was married to Miss Rachel Kane, who preceded him to the other shore some nine years ago. He is survived by two daughters, viz: Mrs. Edward B. Hamel, of Northwood, and Mrs. D. R. White, of Tyrone; also two brothers survive him, David and Frank McClain, of Altoona. He was a pensioned soldier, having served in company F, Second Pennsylvania heavy artillery in the civil war, enlisting February 24, 1864, and discharged January 26, 1866. Yesterday afternoon the remains were moved from the place of death to the home of his daughter, Mrs. David R. White, on Bald Eagle avenue. Funeral services will be held in St. Matthew's Catholic church this morning at 8 o'clock, to be conducted by Rev. Thomas W. Rosensteel, after which the remains will be conveyed to Sinking Valley for interment in the Catholic cemetery near Laurelville. Morning Tribune, Thursday, November 2, 1899
