He was a member of the third draft contingent to leave this city, having been sent to Camp Lee on Oct. 19, 1917. He was made a member of company B, 305th engineers, while located there and was later selected as one of the company cooks. He went to France with his company in March, 1918. Charles McConnell was born in Shamokin, Pa., in 1892, and was 26 years old. He came to this city when an infant and both his father and mother, Charles and Annie McConnell, died before he was four years old. He made his home with an uncle, John McConnell, who resided on the east side, until six years ago, when he also died. From that time until he was selected for the service he made his home with the McIntosh family on Fourteenth avenue. The only known relative, who survives, is Mrs. Kate McConnell, who is an aunt by marriage, being a sister of his step- mother, who died during his childhood. He worked for a number of years for the Pennsylvania Railroad company and for R. A. Meck, the Twelfth street electrician. He was employed at No. 3 roundhouse, when he was called to the colors.
