William McCormick, a young man well known in Altoona, was instantly killed in the Panhandle yard, Pittsburgh, at 6 o'clock on Monday evening. He was a brakeman by occupation, and as nearly as can be learned the accident occurred in the following manner. Mr. McCormick was on his way to his boarding house from work, and to get there quickly boarded a train in the vicinity of Twenty-eighth street. When Twelfth street was reached he swung himself off and started across the track in front of a shifting engine, which he failed to observe coming. He was struck the locomotive and instantly killed. The deceased was in the 24th year of his age and was a son of Thomas and Catharine McCormick, of near McVeytown, Mifflin county. His parents are both dead and there are left to mourn his early death two brothers and one sister. Howard McCormick, residing at Second avenue and Ninth street, Altoona, is a brother, as is also Bruce McCormick, who lives in Pittsburgh. His sister Martha was married on Thursday last to a gentleman named Bowman, and when the accident occurred she was visiting relatives in Buffalo, New York, intending thereafter to go to Harrisburg, where her husband is employed, and there go to housekeeping. The deceased had for some time been a brakeman in the Altoona yard, but last October, accompanied by his brother Bruce, who is also a brakeman, he went west and there obtained employment. He had been railroading for about two years and was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Brakemen. Mr. McCormick was greatly liked by all who knew him and his death will be greatly regretted by his many friends. His remains were brought to Altoona on Philadelphia express last night and conveyed to the residence of his brother Howard. They will be taken to McVeytown for interment, at which place the funeral will take place on Thursday. Altoona Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Thursday, January 13, 1887, page 3 Find A Grave William P.
