James McCurdy, aged 86, a veteran of the Civil war and of the Pennsylvania railroad service, died at his home, 508 Tenth street at 6 o'clock last evening of a stroke suffered on Thursday, July 4. Until the stroke Mr. McCurdy had enjoyed good health, considering his advanced age. Mr. McCurdy enlisted in the Union army on Sept. 15, 1861, when but 19 years old, becoming a member of company D, 49th regiment, Pennsylvania volunteers, and later joined company C, 22nd regiment, Pennsylvania volunteer cavalry. He saw considerable active service and was honorably discharged from the services on Feb. 1, 1864. He first entered the railroad service on Sept. 23, 1865, as a brakeman on the Middle division, later becoming flagman in which position he continued until 1868 when he left the service. He reentered the service in 1872 as assistant conductor in the machine shop yards and in 1873 was promoted to conductor. Shortly thereafter he was made supply conductor in the yards and continued in that capacity until his retirement on Sept. 1, 1912. Mr. McCurdy was born in Spruce Creek valley, near Pennsylvania Furnace, Huntingdon county, on Oct. 20, 1842. Prior to entering the railroad service after his discharge from the army he engaged for a short time in farming in Blair county. He was united in marriage with Miss Sarah Ellen Hall on Jan. 24, 1877. Surviving are his wife, one son, J.H. McCurdy, and four daughters, Anna, Florence and Rachael McCurdy, all at home, and Mrs. J.R. Fields, jr., of this city. One granddaughter, Helen Fields, also survives. Mr. McCurdy was a member of the Second Presbyterian church, Mt. Horeb commandery of the Knights of Malta, Post 62 of the G.A.R., and for sixty-three years had been a member of the Odd Fellows. Funeral services will be held at the late home at 2.30 o'clock Sunday afternoon with Rev. E. Lansing Bennett, pastor of the Second Presbyterian church officiating.
