All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/blair/ _______________________________________________ SISTER BERNITA [McDERMITT] Of the Sisters of Mercy order, the former Esther McDermitt of Altoona, died at 12:20 o'clock Wednesday noon in the Mercy hospital, Pittsburgh, where she had served throughout her entire period in the religious order. Sister Bernita was a daughter of the late David and Cecelia (Hudson) McDermitt and was born May 15, 1886, in Altoona. She entered the Sisters of Mercy order in 1908 in Pittsburgh and subsequently graduated as a nurse at Mercy hospital. She served in many capacities in the hospital until illness forced her to relinquish her duties several months ago. Surviving are five sisters and two brothers, Mrs. G. A. Bender, Mrs. Helen McKenna, Mrs. H.A. Reilly, Miss Katharine McDermitt, Ray [Roy] and David, all of Altoona, and Mrs. Ethel Suckling of Pittsburgh. Friends are being received at the Mercy hospital chapel, Pittsburgh, and interment will be made there. Altoona Mirror, May 11, 1951
