McEldowney, Lifelong Resident of Altoona, Succumbs to Illness. Charles E. McEldowney of 2906 Union avenue, well known retired business man of No. 3 selective service board, died at his home at 4.30 o'clock this morning after having been ill for the past five weeks. Mr. McEldowney was a lifelong resident of the city, having been born here on Nov. 21, 1873, a son of William and Nettie (Walls) McEldowney. For many years he engaged in the manufacturing and bottling of soft drinks, in association with his brothers, Walter L. and the late William H. McEldowney. The firm known as McEldowney Brothers Bottling works, retired from business on June 1, 1937, selling its plant at Chestnut avenue and Ninth street and business franchise to Miles F. Hollister. Named to Board. Mr. McEldowney was named a member of No. 3 selective service board in August of last year, succeeding Dr. Levi Gilbert, who was commissioned a major in the army. He was a member of the First Lutheran church and of the Milton Davis class of the Eighth Avenue Methodist church Sunday school. Mr. McEldowney was also a member of the Altoona Rotary club, of Hiram lodge, No. 616, F. & A.M.; Mountain commandery, No. 10, Knights Templar, Mountain Royal Arch Chapter, No. 189, of the Williamsport consistory and Jaffa Shrine, and of the Altoona lodge of Elks, No. 102. He was also a member of the United Commercial Travelers of America, council No. 180, and a director of the Summit Country club, Cresson. As a youth Mr. McEldowney was quite active in sports, playing baseball with the old Pennsylvania State league and as quarterback on the Altoona football eleven back in the 90's. Later he took up golf, at which he became quite adept, but he never lost his interest in baseball, going south in the spring for many years to witness the training of the big league ball teams. He also was an ardent football fan. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Dora B. (Housum) McEldowney, one daughter, Mrs. Irvin H. Isenberg, at the home, one sister and three brothers, Mrs. C. E. Byerson, Robert W., Guy C. and Walter L. McEldowney, all of the city. Friends may call at the Lafferty funeral home after 7 o'clock this evening. McELDOWNEY - Funeral services for Charles E. McEldowney of 2906 Union avenue, will be held at the Lafferty funeral home at 2.30 o'clock Monday afternoon by Rev. Luke H. Rhoads and Rev. W. L. Armstrong. Interment in Alto-Reste burial park.
