McFarland, one of the pioneer natives of this vicinity and one of Tyrone's best and venerable citizens, died at 8.15 yesterday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. C. Wertz, at Cherry Tree, Indiana county. Last October Mr. and Mrs. McFarland went to Cherry Tree to spend the winter with their two daughters and son, who reside there. Mr. McFarland was then in somewhat failing health, and later he became seriously ill from heart trouble and dropsy. A subsequent alarming development was gangrene which appeared in his left limb, the culmination of arterioscleroses. Three weeks ago he submitted to an operation, his left leg being amputated below the knee, and he rallied encouragingly from the ordeal. But age and the long inroad of disease could not be combated, and at the hour stated the brave fight of years against physical ailment ended, and the ready spirit departed beyond. Samuel Breneman McFarland was aged 73 years, 4 months and 15 days. He was the son of John and Nancy McFarland, who were among the earliest residents of Antis township, in the neighborhood of the present site of Tyrone, before the formation of Blair county. It was near this place that he was born September 16, 1838, and he passed over half his life on the farm, being a tiller of the soil at the time of his marriage in August, 1860, to Miss Mary Maher, his faithful companion in the home for over a half century past. Thirty-three years ago Mr. McFarland came to Tyrone, securing employment at the planing mill of F. D. Breyer & Co., and he was their capable, trustworthy stationary engineer until the growing infirmities which afflicted him obliged him to relinquish active work. He became sadly crippled, being unable to walk and unable to hear for many years previous to his final passing. With it all, he was cheerful and resigned, and, with a loving family intensely devoted to him, he derived more pleasure from life than many who are blessed with physical strength and sound body. He was a good man, pure in mind and heart, and with a soul attuned to the praises which he knew he was to hear from the celestial choir. He was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian church of Tyrone and did his duty as such to the extent of his power. Of the large family, eleven children having been born to Mr. and Mrs. McFarland, he is survived by his good wife, and the following sons and daughters: R. Calvin, at Brookville; Mrs. J. C. Wertz, Mrs. J. A. Shollenberger and James W., of Cherry Tree; Archibald I. of Kansas, G. Edward, of West Homestead; Mrs. Wilbur C. Eyer, of Tyrone; and Mrs. J. M. Bryan, of Rochester, N. Y. He was the last survivor of his parents' family, having outlived all his brothers and sisters. The remains will be brought to Tyrone Thursday afternoon, and will be taken to the late residence of the deceased, 1147 West Fifteenth street. The time of the funeral will be announced tomorrow.
