Our community was shocked Saturday morning to hear the sad intelligence of Mr. Edward McGraw's death [March 15, 1884]. Although it was generally known that he was quite ill, and that his illness was of a serious character, yet the announcement that he died Saturday forenoon, surprised everyone. It was only a few days ago that Mr. McGraw, who was always a stout, rugged, healthy looking man, congratulated himself on being in such excellent health and felt as if he were the soundest and most active man of his years in the county. Mr. McGraw was born in Morrison's Cove on the 15th day of April 1816, and therefore had he lived until the 15th of next month he would have been 68 years of age. He came to Hollidaysburg from Freedom in 1852 to take charge of the Alms House as steward, in which position he remained until 1863. Retiring from his stewardship, which office he filled with great satisfaction, leaving the affairs of the county in splendid shape, he moved into town and engaged in the mercantile business. He has lived here ever since, except for the last year or so, when he has been making his home with his son John G., at Sarah Furnace. He regarded this pleasant, well situated residence and all its enjoyable surroundings a paradise, and up to the date of his sickness was in the enjoyment of the best of health, and was contented and happy. Mr. McGraw was a good citizen and highly esteemed by his fellow men. He may have had some faults, but who in the human flesh is free from faults. He was an upright Christian gentleman and a consistent member of the Lutheran Church. He was a well known citizen of his community, and will be very much missed. His wife died one year ago last January*, and he leaves surviving him four sons, each of whom is well known. These are William and John G., who live at Sarah Furnace; James M., who lives in this town, and H. Al., residing near Eldorado. The obsequies will be observed at the residence of his son, John G. McGraw, at Sarah Furnace, this morning at 10 o'clock, and the funeral cortege will arrive at the Lutheran Cemetery at this place, where the remains will be interred at about 1 p.m. Morning Tribune, Altoona, PA, March 17, 1884 Additional Comments: *Edward's wife was Sarah A. Delancy. According to pg 277, Book C, by Claar, Lutheran Cemetery records, Hollidaysburg, Sarah's date of death was December 29, 1882, not January. Note: Edward McGraw's middle initial "M." was found in the book, 1859 Map of Blair County (Township Maps), Allegheny Township where he was noted as: "E. M. McGraw, Stewart of the Poorhouse."
