McKINNEY: Former National Guard Commander Dies, Was 85 Edgar A. McKinney, 85, of 414 Main street, who served as commander of Sheridan Cavalry Troop, Tyrone, during the Spanish-American War and was a former burgess and squire of Bellwood, died at 7:45 a.m. on Saturday, in the Veterans Hospital, Altoona, where he had been a patient since last August. As a soldier, McKinney served in Puerto Rico during the Spanish- American war and was captain of the Sheridan troop on the Mexican border. Later he advanced to major in command of New Castle, Tyrone, Bellefonte, and Punxsutawney troops of the Pennsylvania National Guard, a post he resigned in 1929. He entered the service of the P.R.R. as a foreman's helper in the Juniata shops in 1903 and was appointed captain of the police on the Bellwood division in 1913. He was named lieutenant of the police on the Cresson division upon the merger of the Bellwood and Cresson divisions in 1918, when the Pittsburgh and Cresson divisions merged, he was named sergeant of police. He retired in 1938 with 34 years of service. He served as justice of the peace from 1938 until 1947, when the family moved to Washington, D.C. for a time. He also served as burgess for a period of eight years. He was born at Ironsville on Nov. 28, 1877, a son of James and Elizabeth (Sawyer) McKinney and was married to Goldie Mae Moore in 1904, at Lewistown. Surviving are his wife, one son, Warren, of Parkersburg, a daughter, Mrs. Mabel Allen of Silver Springs, Md., and three grand children. He was the last of his family. He was a member of the Methodist Church and was affiliated with the Masons and the V.F.W. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Johnson Mortuary by the Rev. Ardell G. Gould.
