James McQuade, one of the oldest and most widely known residents of this section, died at his home in Sinking Valley, on Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, after a few days' illness with pneumonia. Although not in the best of health for a month or so past, he was not compelled to take to his bed until last Thursday. John and Elizabeth (nee Henderson) McQuade, the father and mother of the subject of this notice, resided at Spring Mills, Centre county, Pa., where he was born October 21, 1812, his age at death being 78 years, 5 months and 28 days. When he was at the age of two years his parents, with their family, moved to the Huntingdon Furnace mills, where he grew up to manhood and obtained his education in the school house at the old stone mill. His teachers were Mr. Toffield, (an Irishman), John B. Tussey, Thomas Bean and Alex. Rankin. Among his schoolmates the following familiar names: John, Andrew and Rev. George Guyer, Hon. Jacob Burley, J. Patton Lyon, all of whom have preceded him to the grave. In 1831, while yet in his teens, he entered the service of David Stewart at Coleraine Forge first in the store and afterwards as manager, where he remained until 1839 when he went with his uncle Elias to Cambridge City, Indiana, and returned in two years and in July 1841, succeeded James Campbell, who had two months previous taken the place of Elias Beatty, and became the manager of the Tyrone Forges, of William M. Lyon & Co., under the general management of John T. Mathias at that time in which capacity he continued until 1868 and for two years thereafter was engaged in the mercantile business in Ironsville. About this time he purchased the George Morrow farm and removed thereto and where he has since resided. In connection with farming he was also engaged in the lime business on Elk Run with H. F. McIntosh of Newry for many years. September 10, 1846, he was married to Mary, eldest daughter of John and Barbara McCullough, of Birmingham. To this union six children were born, four of whom survive: Mrs. Warren Crawford, Mrs. W. K. Garland, James, jr., of Sinking Valley, and Mrs. John Ray, of Cleveland, O. The wife and mother died August 24, 1869, from injuries received by being run over by the cars a short distance east of town while on her way home from the station. He also leaves four sisters, Mrs. J. D. Loomis and Mr. [sic] Dr. Munday, of Dayton, O., Mrs. E. White, of St. Paul, Minn., and Miss Maggie McQuead, of Altoona, a teacher in your public schools. Mr. McQuead in the early fifties was admitted a member of Mountain lodge 28, F. A. M., Altoona, and on July 10, 1872, obtained a permit and became a charter member of Tyrone lodge, 494, F. A. M. Formerly an old line whig, he naturally drifted into the republican party, in which organization he was at all times an active and aggressive member. Although not seeking political preferment he has filled faithfully, and with great credit and honor, many offices in the several districts in which he has resided. He was the pioneer of this town and assisted in laying it off into lots. A man somewhat retired in his manner and domestic in his habits, to those for whom he took a liking he was ever a steadfast friend. Liberal without ostentation, many can fully attest in this section who have been the sharer of his bounties. A man of good education, an excellent accountant and well versed in mathematics, and well posted upon all the leading questions of the day. He will be sadly missed not alone in the home circle, but throughout this entire community. Funeral services will be held at his late home in Sinking Valley, near the Elk run public road, three miles south from this town, Tuesday morning, April 21, at 10 o'clock, to be conducted by Rev. J. J. Coale. Interment in the Presbyterian graveyard at Birmingham.
