McTamany of Altoona suicided at Pittsburg Friday night. Had been drinking heavily, despondent, took carbolic acid, body taken to Allegheny morgue, shipped home to wife and five children, is the brief obituary of a railroad engineer on the road between Pittsburg and Altoona. Indiana Weekly Messenger, Indiana, Pa., Wed., Feb. 21, 1906 A Fatal Mistake It Resulted in the Death of Francis J. McTamany Francis J. McTamany, a well known Pittsburg division freight engineer, whose home was in Altoona, met a horrible death in Pittsburg Friday afternoon. He had been in Pittsburg a couple of days having gone there on a run with a freight train. Friday afternoon awakening from sleep he asked for a drink. Just as his request was about to be acceded to he remarked that here is some and picked up a flask which contained carbolic acid. Not knowing what the contents of the bottle were he drank some. A physician was summoned but despite all medical aid the man sank rapidly until he passed away. Francis J. McTamany was a son of Peter (deceased) and Julia McTamany, was born in Altoona and was aged about 38 years. He had been employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad company for a number of years and was held in high esteem by a wide circle of friends. He was a member of the Catholic church, the Young Men's Institute and other organizations. He is survived by his wife and three children; also by his mother.
