Ephraim Wagner Mentzer died at his home on Mulberry street last night at 10.20 o'clock. He had been ill for the past two months from a complication of diseases. Mr. Mentzer was born in Chambersburg, Pa., June 24, 1831, and came to Blair county forty-six years ago. He was a miller by trade and followed that occupation in early life. Later he embarked in the business of a wholesale and retail shipper of coal, and established a most successful trade. He was an active worker in the Lutheran church of Hollidaysburg, an elder of the congregation and secretary of the Sunday school for many years. He was also a member of Portage lodge No. 220 of Masons, Mount Moriah chapter of Masons, and Mountain commandery No. 10, Knights Templar. He was also a past grand of Hollidaysburg lodge No. 119, Independent Order Odd Fellows. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Mentzer, one son, John W. Mentzer, his partner in the coal business; one daughter, Mrs. D. M. Thompson, of Williamsburg; one sister, Mrs. Sarah Law, of Martinsburg; four step-brothers, Rev. W. H. Mentzer, of Tunkhannock, J. D. Mentzer, of Arch Springs; David Mentzer, of Bolivar, and John Mentzer, of Hastings, and three step sisters, Mrs. Hannah Johnston, of Huntingdon; Mrs. Rebecca Woomer, of Bald Eagle, and Mrs. Emma Ermine, of Juniata. Funeral services will be conducted at the late residence of the deceased on Mulberry street to-morrow at 2 p.m. The remains will be interred in the Presbyterian cemetery at Hollidaysburg. The lateness of the hour forbids a more detailed account of the life of the deceased. Morning Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Tuesday, July 11, 1899
