All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/blair/ _______________________________________________ VETERAN SHOPMAN EXPIRES SUDDENLY Suffering a heart attack at his home about 3.45 o'clock yesterday afternoon, William Joseph Metzgar, aged 75, of 1112 Twentieth avenue, a retired employe of the Altoona works, died within a few minutes. He had been in fair health prior to the sudden attack. Mr. Metzgar retired from the pattern department of the South Altoona foundries early in 1927 after having been employed by the railroad company for a period of thirty-one years and eleven months. He entered the railroad service as a wood turner and did much of the cabinet work for the local offices. He was born on Jan. 24, 1857, at Alleghany Furnace, a son of George W. and Sarah A. Metzgar, and with the exception of two years' residence in Newry spent his entire life in the city. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Catherine (Riling) Metzgar, four sons and two daughters, Chester of Easton, Harry of the city, Mrs. Myrtle Amick of Philadelphia, Herbert of the city, Luther of Merchantville, N.J., and Clara, at home. Ten grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and the following brothers and sisters, Mrs. Ida Watson of Pittsburgh, Mrs. Mayme Loreman, Mrs. William Paul and Samuel Metzgar, all of the city, also survive. Mr. Metzgar was a member of the First Lutheran church and the Henry Baker Bible class and a past president of the Twentieth Avenue Civic association. Funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the First Lutheran church with Rev. Marion Justus Kline, D.D., officiating. Interment will be made in Fairview cemetery.
