Death of an Old Resident of the Mountain City. At 11.40 o'clock Saturday morning Joseph Metzger, a life long resident of Blair county and for many years of this city, died at his home, 1509 Fifth avenue, of pneumonia and valvular heart trouble. He had been ailing for several weeks. Deceased was born in Sinking Valley, Blair county, April 20, 1835. He came to Altoona when a young man and for more than thirty-two years was an employe of the Pennsylvania Railroad company. He was a veteran of the civil war, having served three years and three months in company E, Sixty-first Pennsylvania volunteer infantry. He was a member of Lieutenant S. C. Potts port 62, Grand Army of the Republic, and for many years was a member of the First Lutheran church. He was a man of excellent character and largely esteemed by a host of friends. He was married on October 19, 1865, to Mary Patterson, at Jamestown, Mercer county, Pa., who survives with these children: Mrs. Anna E. Weber, of Philadelphia; Lizzie F., Susie, Margaret, at home, and John M., of La Jose, Clearfield county. He is also survived by these brothers and sisters: G. W., Charles M., Mrs. Susan Rodkey, of Altoona, and Mrs. Mary E. Stitelers, of Sinking Valley. The funeral will take place this afternoon, services to be conducted at the house at 2.30 o'clock by Rev. O. C. Roth, pastor of the First Lutheran church. Interment will be made in Fairview cemetery. Morning Tribune, Monday, February 12, 1900
