METZKER CALLED SUDDENLY Prominent Martinsburg Resident Fatally Stricken as He Sits In Chair Reading Altoona Mirror. Isaac D. Metzker, a prominent resident of Martinsburg and retired farmer, died very suddenly at his home at that place at 7 o'clock last evening of a stroke of paralysis, death coming to him as he sat in a rocking chair in the kitchen reading the Altoona Mirror. Mr. Metzker was the owner of a farm near Martinsburg and he had spent the day on the farm making fence. He returned to the house about 6 o'clock, to all appearances as well as usual, although he complained of feeling tired. He ate a hearty supper and afterwards sat on a rocking chair in the kitchen, while Mrs. Metzker went out for a short time to a neighbor's house. Upon her return she found him sitting in a position of repose. He had his glasses on and he held The Mirror in his hands. Believing that he had fallen asleep she did not go to him at first, but a few moments later she was horrified to find that he was dead. A physician was summoned and after an examination he found that death had resulted from a stroke of paralysis. Mr. Metzker was a son of Daniel and Virginia Metzker and was born near Fredericksburg, June 29, 1849. He grew up on his father's farm and followed farming during the greater part of his life, although he was a carpenter by trade and followed that occupation at various times. He resided in Altoona for a number of years, being employed by the contracting firm of Bushman & Noffsker and making his home on Seventeenth street, below Margaret avenue. About four years ago he retired from farming and for two years held the position of steward of the old folks' home at Martinsburg. At the end of that period he took charge of a similar institution at Carlisle and remained there until the beginning of the present year when he returned to Martinsburg, he and Mrs. Metzker taking up their residence on West Allegheny street, it being his intention to spend the remainder of his life in retirement and looking after his farm which was rented. In politics Mr. Metzker was a Democrat and a few years ago he was a candidate for the party nomination for county commissioner. He was a member of the Church of the Brethren and took a prominent part in the work of the church and in the public affairs of the communities where he resided. He was married on Feb. 22, 1873, to Miss Sarah E. Stiffler, a daughter of Joseph Stiffler of Frankstown township. They had no children and he is survived by his wife and one brother, George D. Metzker of near Saxton and one sister, Mrs. Priscilla Hartman of near Martinsburg. The funeral will take place on Monday morning at 10 o'clock with services in the Church of the Brethren at Martinsburg. Altoona Mirror, Saturday, 29 April 1916, p. 16, col. 2
