Miles, age 80, of 110 Meade Street, Northwood, Tyrone died Saturday, February 14, 2004 at 9:40 a.m. at his home following a brief illness. He was born June 21, 1923 in Tyrone, the son of John Mitchell and Lydia Myrtle Woomer Miles and on May 3, 1947 was married at the Evangelical United Brethren Church by Reverend Budd Smith to Verva L. Harter who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Mary Ann, wife of Randy Hennon of Beaver Falls; Martha E. Fernandes of Tyrone and fiancee Michael Luckett of Mill Creek; and Sarah Jane, wife of Andrew Smith of Tyrone; six grandchildren; and three great- grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister- Bernandine Fink, a guest at Epworth Manor and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant son and three brothers - Vernon, Gerald and John E. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Howard Gardner Post No. 281 American Legion, Anderson Denny Post No. 4559 VFW, Sinking Valley Grange and the National Rifle Association. He was a graduate of Tyrone High School Class of 1943 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 11th Emergency Rescue Boat Squadron, in the Caribbean Sea area. He retired in June 1988 from Chicago Rivet and Machine Company as a General Foreman after 40 years service. He was an Eagle Scout and was a member of the 1940 Championship Football Team of Tyrone High School which played for the state championship at Shenandoah. He was a very faithful fan of Tyrone Area High School athletics and was also a Penn State and Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He enjoyed hunting. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Funeral service for Mr. Miles will be held Tuesday, February 17, 2004 at 11 a.m. at the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home, Inc. with Reverend Dr. Dennis Reedy officiating. Interment will be made in Bald Eagle Cemetery. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Memorial Fund, Christ United Methodist Church, Pennsylvania Avenue and 14th Street, Tyrone, PA 16686.
