Mitchum died at Knollwood Military Retirement Community in Washington, DC on May 14, 2004 at the age of 97 years. She was born in Medix Run, the daughter of Mary Riley and Joseph Keys. She grew up and attended school in Tyrone where she was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, which she continued to support throughout her life. Until moving to Knollwood in 1992, she resided primarily in New York City. She was the widow of Captain Arthur F. Mitchum, USA Retired. Her sister, Martha Keys Hicks of Tyrone, survives her. Dorothy Mitchum was a 1927 graduate of the Clearfield Hospital School of Nursing, Clearfield and remained a supportive member of the alumni association. Her nursing career included positions at various commercial organizations and at several New York area hospitals. Mrs. Mitchum specialized in the care of patients with eye injury and eye surgery. Mrs. Mitchum served in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II at Army hospitals in England and in the New York area. She was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant in November 1945. Dorothy Mitchum was an active, life member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a Past Regent of The Major Jonathan Lawrence Chapter, 1-096-NY in New York City. She was a charter member of The Heritage Club at the Emerald level. She was active in support of the DAR Schools and a Charter Member of the Tamassee Legacy Society to guarantee care for the children of Tamassee DAR School. Dorothy K. Mitchum will be buried with appropriate military honors alongside her husband in Arlington National Cemetery. Arrangements through Joseph Gawlers and Sons in Washington, DC.
