MONTI Mr. Monti, 84, of 904 28th Ave. died at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, 1994, at Mercy Regional Health System, following a brief illness. Mr. Monti retired as director of music from Altoona Area School District in 1972, with 38 years' service. He also taught elementary band at St. Therese's School from 1975 to 1989, organized and conducted the Altoona Campus Concert Band and ROTC Band from 1965 to 1975, served as supervisor of instrumental music in the school district from 1953 to 1966 and was band director for Altoona High School from 1950 to 1966. Mr. Monti also taught instrumental music at Barker Conservatory of Music, D. S. Keith Junior High School from 1934 to 1949, and private instrumental music for 10 years. He was born Sept. 29, 1909, in Catania, Italy, the son of Joseph and Josephine (Consolo) Monti. He married Angeline Monica in 1935 in Gallitzin. Surviving are his wife, a daughter, Joyanna Denis of Juniata Gap, and three grandsons. Also surviving are a brother and two sisters: Lucien Evanchick of Waynesboro, Amelia Olmes of Tampa, Fla., and Nicholas of Altoona. Mr. Monti was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church. He was also a member of Pennsylvania All-American Judges Association, a former member of the Altoona Symphony Orchestra, where he was a guest conductor; American Federation of Musicians, Pennsylvania Music Educators Association and Pennsylvania State Educators Association, and had conducted pit orchestra for Altoona Community Theater musicals in the 1960s. In 1959, Mr. Monti received the Optimist Club "Man of the Year" award and a Chamber of Commerce Award for outstanding service. He was awarded the Kiwanis Leadership Award in 1966, the Jaycees Leadership Award in 1959, an American Business Club certificate of appreciation in 1966, Citizen's Society Highest Award for Civic Leadership and other citations including the Pennsylvania State Senate and House of Representatives, City of Altoona, Reserve Officers Association of the United States, WVAM and People Are Great. He was a 1928 graduate of Altoona High School, attended Stetson University, Deland, Fla., from 1930 to 1932; was a 1934 graduate of Juniata College with a bachelor of science degree in music education and did graduate work at Penn State University. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Santella Funeral Home. MONTI - The funeral of John C. Monti of 904 28th Ave. will be held with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Therese Catholic Church by Monsignor Roy Kline. Entombment at Calvary Mausoleum. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Santella Funeral Home, where a wake service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Petrogallo and Josephine Monti. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the John Monti Scholarship Fund, c/o Altoona Area High School. Under Mr. Monti's leadership during his first year, the high school band was honored for its outstanding performance by the National Band Judges Association.
