David Mountain, one of Frankstown's oldest and respected citizens, died at his home in Frankstown on Friday, March 7, 1919 at 4:30 p.m., of complications due to his advanced years, his final illness dating back to December, 1918. His sturdy, virile constitution was strong in its resistance and he retained his intellectual vision and consciousness until the end. Mr. Mountain was born at Springfield Furnace, Blair county, on April 22, 1847. In early manhood he came with his parents, Samuel and Nancy Mountain, to Frankstown township, locating in the West Loop. At the outbreak of the Civil war his patriotism called him to the colors when only 16 years of age. He enlisted in company G, Twelfth regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry, serving with the army of the Shenandoah valley, and although wounded twice, remained with his command until the close of the war, being mustered out on June 20, 1865. On his return to civil life he, with his brother, John Mountain, engaged in the lumbering business successfully for a number of years. In 1891 he purchased his home in Frankstown and engaged in agricultural pursuits. He also purchased the Henry Van Allman homestead farm of 220 acres in the East Loop and had been developing a general farm and dairy business. On December 4, 1885, he was married to Miss Henrietta Kephart, who with their two sons, Samuel A. and David D. Mountain, survive him. Also five grandchildren, Vada Pearl, Edith Marie, Doris Evelyn, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel A. Mountain, and Helen Leonor and Leon D. Mountain, daughter and son of Mr. and Mrs. David D. Mountain, and one brother, Samuel Mountain, of Pine Croft, Blair county. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. G. F. Boggs, D.D., pastor of the Eighth Avenue Methodist Episcopal church, Altoona, a personal friend of the deceased, on Monday afternoon, amid a large concourse of friends. Interment was made in the Fairmont cemetery at Geeseytown. Altoona Tribune, Saturday Morning, March 15, 1919
