Myers, 83, of 401 Maple Avenue, Bellwood, and a guest of Moran's Home, died at the home at 5:55 a.m. Thursday, May 20, 1993, following an extended illness. He was born in Bellwood on Dec. 21, 1909, the son of Abram and Verna (Lee) Myers and on May 15, 1941, was married to Thelma Weaver who survives. Also surviving is one daughter, Mrs. Christopher (Mollie) Stitt of Collegeville, PA; two grandchildren: Bethany and Travis Stitt; three sisters: Rita Cornmesser of Bellwood, Amanda Clapper of Hagerstown, MD, and Dorothy Sheriff of Clarion. He was preceded in death by one brother. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, a member of and teacher for the Pioneer Sunday School Class, a member of the Official Board and had served on a number of various church boards and committees. He was a member of Logan Lodge #490 F & AM of Altoona, Jaffa Shrine, Altoona Consistory, the Altoona Navy League, the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts of Bellwood, a member of the Bellwood Lions Club, the Pennsylvania State Education Association, the National Education Association, the Retired School Principals Association, the Retired Blair County School Administrators, the Reserve Officers Association and the AARP. He was a graduate of Bellwood High School, of Catawba College where he received a Bachelor's Degree, studied at Juniata College and received a Master's in Education from Penn State University. He served as an elementary school principal in the Bellwood-Antis School District, retiring in 1972, after 39 years of service. During his tenure, he coached basketball and produced championship teams in District VI. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in both the Pacific and European Theatres during World War II and also served during the Korean Conflict. Following his release from active duty, he served in the Naval Reserve at the Altoona Training Center as a member of the staff in charge of instruction, retiring with the rank of Captain. The Lewis M. Myers Elementary School in Bellwood was dedicated in his honor. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 22, 1993, at 11 a.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sandy Hunter officiating. Interment will follow in Logan Valley Cemetery. Friends may call at the Jon C.
