Terribly burned when an oil can in the hands of her husband exploded while he was lighting a fire in the kitchen range at their home, 112 Sixth avenue, Juniata, at 10:45 o'clock yesterday morning, Mrs. William Nyholm, aged 43, is lying in a very critical condition at the Altoona hospital. Her husband, who was badly burned about the hands and arms in extinguishing her burning clothes, was also taken to the hospital, but his condition is not critical. The home was badly gutted by a fire that followed the explosion, when the burning oil was scattered to all parts of the room. Altoona Times, Altoona, Pa., Monday Morning, December 23, 1918 NYHOLM. Mrs. William Nyholm, aged 43, residing at 112 Sixth avenue, Juniata, died at the Altoona hospital at 1.20 o'clock this afternoon from the terrible burns of the body sustained Sunday when a kerosene can filled with oil used in accelerating a fire exploded and threw the contents over her clothing. The burns sustained by the unfortunate woman covered the greater portion of her body and little hope was entertained for her recovery from the time she was brought to the hospital for treatment. At 10.30 Sunday morning deciding to hurry on a fire in the kitchen stove Mrs. Nyholm poured some oil directly from a can on the smouldering coals. In an instant there was a flash and the burning kerosene was thrown over her clothing. Her husband who was near was also badly burned about the face and hands. Mrs. Nyholm, with a great presence of mind, ran to the rear of the house and threw herself in the mudsoaked garden while the husband secured a blanket hurriedly and tried to smother out the flames but not until the woman's body was badly seared. Mrs. Nyholm is survived by her husband and three children, two sons being in the federal service, Sydney in the navy at Cape May while the eldest son, Ernest, is with the U.S. Forces in France. A daughter, Virginia, is in Chester, Pa. The body was removed to the home of a neighbor, Mr. and Mrs. F. L. Fagley, of 110 Sixth avenue where funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at 3 o'clock followed by interment in Grandview cemetery. Her son, Sydney and daughter, Miss Virginia, have arrived in Juniata to attend the funeral.
