On Monday morning Mr. Matthias Oeffinger, who kept a saloon at 505 Fourth avenue, attended to his business until about 11 o'clock, and then complained of a singular uneasiness about his stomach. A physician was sent for, in the meantime Mr. Oeffinger taking to his bed. The physician prescribed for him, and said his ailment was inflammation of the stomach. During the afternoon he became deranged in mind. He passed a restless night, longing for the day and asking if it was not 6 o'clock. In the meantime be gave some direction to his family, having apparently some premonition that death was impending. When the clock struck 6, singular as it may appear, he expired. He had been a citizen of Altoona since 1867, and was in the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company until within the past five years, when his health failed, compelling him to engage in other business. He was 55 years old on the 24th of last February. The funeral will take place from his late residence in the Eighth ward at 2:30 P.M. to day. His wife, it will be remembered, was struck in the eye some weeks ago by a stone thrown by a mischievous boy and severely injured. Her eye was operated on last Friday, but the physician said the sight was permanently destroyed. With her Mr. Oeffinger had lived 29 years, and leaves two married daughters and a son to mourn their loss. Altoona Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Thursday, April 17, 1879, page 3
