Martinsburg Herald, December 1, 1916 WILLIAM ALEXANDER OLER William Alexander Oler, a well known resident of the Third ward, died at his home, 1329 Eighteenth avenue, at 12.20 o'clock Sunday morning, following a brief illness of pneumonia. He became ill at Bedford last Monday, where he had gone with his wife to attend the funeral of a brother-in-law. His illness was not considered serious until Friday morning, when his condition became critical and he became gradually weaker until Sunday morning, when he passed quietly away. Mr. Oler was born in Everett, April 2, 1850, and resided in his native town until a young man. He then went to Bedford, making his home there until 1890, when he moved to Altoona. He was married to Miss Louisa Kegg, of Pleasantville, Pa., on February 5, 1873. She survives with five children, Mrs. William M. Flanigan, of Philadelphia; George Edgar, Sister M. Clementine, of the Sisters of Charity, of Greensburg; Miss Susan and Miss Josephine. He is also survived by one brother, James Oler, of Everett, and one sister, Mrs. Simon Smouse, of Jeanette. Mr. Oler was a Christian gentleman, by his exemplary life and splendid character commanding the respect and admiration of his many friends. He was a prominent member of St. John's Catholic church and had for the past twenty-five years been an usher at St. John's. He was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul society and of the Catholic Knights of America. Converted to the Catholic faith at the age of twenty- three, Mr. Oler had for years been unostentatious but ever active in the work of Christian charity and will be sorely missed by the many who had felt his guidance in hours of need. Solemn requiem mass will be said at St. John's pro-cathedral at 7 o'clock on Wednesday morning. The body will be taken to Bedford on the train leaving the city at 8.10 o'clock, and burial will follow at that place. Altoona Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Monday Morning, November 27, 1916
