O'Shea, V.F., 62, Pastor of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Bellefonte, died at 4 p.m. Tuesday, September 18, 1973, in Centre Community Hospital, Bellefonte, after an extended illness. Msgr. O'Shea spent half of his priestly life in Altoona, serving as Assistant Pastor of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament from the time of his ordination, May 18, 1939, until being named Pastor of the Bellefonte Church in May 1956. Son of the late Michael and Louise (Godde) O'Shea, he was born February 26, 1911 in Clovne, County Cork, Ireland but resided in Port Chester, N.Y., when he began studies for the priesthood. He attended Don Bosco College, Newton, N.J. and St. Francis Seminary in Loretto and was ordained by the late Bishop Richard T. Guilfoyle in the Altoona Cathedral. Surviving is a brother Michael of Rye, N.Y. His Mother died two months ago. Msgr. O'Shea served the Altoona-Johnstown Catholic Diocese in many official capacities He was vicar forane of the Centre-Clinton County Deanery and a Diocesan Consultant since 1964, Chairman of the Diocesan Liturgical Commission since 1959, Diocesan Moderator of the Legion of Mary for many years and Master of Ceremonies for Bishop Guilfoyle while he was stationed in Altoona. On the Diocesan Marriage Tribunal, he served as Notary since 1948, Pro Synodal Judge since 1959 and Pro Synodal Examiner since 1964. He was also the Bishop's representative at the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference. He was named a domestic prelate with the title of Right Reverend Monsignor on February 22, 1955.
