"Roy" Packard, Sr., 72, of Altoona, PA, died unexpectedly Monday afternoon April 26, 2004 at the Bon Secours Holy Family Hospital, Altoona, PA. He was born March 3, 1932 in Bethlehem, PA, the son of the late Melvin L. Sr. and Lena Fraley Packard. He married Patricia L. Price on April 30, 1954 in Coraopolis, PA. Mr. Packard was a member of First United Methodist Church of Hollidaysburg. He retired in December 1989 as a supervisor for Bell Atlantic Telephone after 35 years of service. He was a graduate of Liberty High School and also of Pennsylvania State University with an Associate Degree in Business Management. He was a U.S. Air force Veteran, serving from 1950-1955. Leroy enjoyed gardening, cooking, traveling, playing shuffleboard, bowling and spending time with his grandchildren. He was involved with Special Olympics, Easter Seals and the Blair County Association of the Blind. He was a member of Hiram Lodge #616 Free and Accepted Masons; Valley of Altoona Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite; Chief Logan Lodge #131 Tall Cedars of Lebanon; Jaffa Shrine, where he was a trustee for 18 years; charter member of the Jaffa Color Guard; president of the Improvement Association; president and secretary of the Wiring Committee, chairman of Sports Show Concessions; member of Circus Concessions; member of Jaffa Horseshoe Curve Hillbilly Clan #74; charter member and officer of Order of Quetzalcoatl Colotic Mitzli #91; member of the Order of Knights, Eagles and Tigers; member of the Royal Order of Jesters Court #70; member of the Altoona Shrine Club and a member of the Oriental Band Order of the turtle. Mr. Packard was past president of Bell Telephone Pioneers; past president of Bell Athletic Association; a life member of the Bavarian Aid Society; a member of the Swiss Rifle Club; a member of the Unter Uns Society, where he had served as president/secretary/treasurer of the Tuesday Night Shuffleboard League. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 245, Inc., State College, PA and a member of the American Association of Retired Persons. Surviving are his wife, Patricia, to whom he would have been married 50 years on April 30, 2004; daughter Linda Walker of Harrisburg; a son, Leroy A. "Butch" Packard, Jr. of Altoona and his wife, Sue; daughter Lauren Matteo of Harrisburg; daughter Patty Carmichael of Altoona; grandchildren, Janet Walker, Aubri Carmichael, Scott Packard, Christopher Packard, Brandie Matteo, Brady Carmichael, and Casey Matteo; uncles, Leroy, Jr. and Francis Packard and three nephews. Mr. Packard was preceded in death by a brother, Melvin L., Jr. Friends will be received from 2-9 p.m. Thursday, April 29, 2004 and from 10 a.m. to 12 noon Friday, April 30, 2004 at E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home, Inc. 2309 Broad Avenue, Altoona, PA, where a Masonic Funeral Service will be held on Thursday at 7 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at 12 noon on Friday, April 30, at the funeral home, with Rev. Dr. B. L. Brinton Shafer. Entombment at Alto Reste Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the Jaffa Endowment Fund, P. O.
