When we penned Thursday the fact that John O. Palmer was a very sick man we did not think that we would be called upon so soon to chronicle his demise. After a lingering illness extending over many months, with consumption, he died at 8.50 o'clock on Thursday evening. Born in Bavaria, August 11, 1841, he had covered in life the short space of 47 years, 6 months and 22 days. He emigrated to the United States from his native home in 1857 and settled in New York City, where he resided until 1871, when he removed with his family to this place, and shortly afterward became foreman of the large cigar factory of C. E. Picher & Co., which position he filled with fidelity, and when that firm dissolved he went into business for himself, in company with a brother, and in which line of business he was engaged up until a few months ago, when failing health compelled him to quit all manual labor. On the 20th of October, 1861, in the city of New York, he was married to Miss Sarah Becker and to this union was born ten children, four sons and six daughters, eight of whom, with his beloved wife, survive him. The children living are Mrs. Kate Reinhart, of Altoona; Mrs. Annie Straightiff, of Curwensville; Mrs. Maggie Galbraith, Andrew, Louis, Carrie, Rosie and Stella, of this place. He also leaves three brothers and three sisters - Eugene, Mrs. Fred Hoffman and Mrs. Michael Vogt, of this place; one sister in Germany, Gabriel, in New York city and Andrew, in Johnstown. He was a member of Tyrone lodge No. 152, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Tyrone conclave No. 138, Improved Order of Heptasophs, and the society Eintracht, and also a member of Cigarmakers' Beneficial society of New York. He served two terms as assistant burgess of this borough in 1882 and 1883. He was a good citizen, a kind and indulgent parent, a fond husband and will be sadly missed in the home circle as well as by his numerous friends and neighbors. Altoona Tribune, March 14, 1889 Note: Listed as Oscar Palmer in the 1880 Tyrone, Blair County, census.
