Brother Pheasant has been a consistent member of the M. E. Church, at Kenady appointment, for quite a number of years, he being its first class leader with a membership of five. Always willing to do his duty as a Christian man, industrious, honest and kind, a regular attendant at Sabbath school. Four weeks ago he was confined to his bed with severe sickness, suffering great pain until death relieved him. He is gone, leaving behind the brightest assurance that he was fully prepared to enter into the rest prepared for the people of God. June 6, 1921 Joshua Pheasant, Civil War Veteran, Summoned Joshua Pheasant, a veteran of the Civil war, died yesterday afternoon at 3.30 o'clock at the home of his daughter Mrs. J. H. Brumbaugh of 1547 Pleasant Valley avenue, near Altoona, death resulting from diseases incident to advanced age and weakened condition after an illness of five weeks. He was born in Trough Creek Valley, Huntingdon county, on June 13, 1837. During the Civil war he served with company E, Forth-fifth regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers. During the greater part of his life he followed the occupation of farming, his farm being located in the vicinity of Bald Eagle, Centre county. He retired from active farm life four years ago, at which time he took up his residence at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Brumbaugh. Mr. Pheasant was a member of the Eighth Avenue Methodist church and also affiliated with the Craig Post, G. A. R. of Bellefonte. He is survived by three children: Mrs. Thomas Shaughnessy of Bellefonte and Mrs. J. H. Brumbaugh and Mrs. Carrie Kuhn of Altoona, seventeen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held from the N. A. Stevens funeral chapel tomorrow evening at 7.30 o'clock. The body will be taken on the 7.25 train on Wednesday morning to Curtin, Centre county, where further services will be held in the Methodist church. Interment will be made in an adjoining cemetery. The body may be viewed anytime at the Stevens mortuary. Please omit flowers. Joshua R. PHEASANT Democratic Watchman, Bellefonte, Pa. June 10, 1921 Joshua Pheasant, an old Civil war veteran and for many years a resident near Mt. Eagle, this county, died on Sunday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. H. Brumbaugh, Altoona, following an illness of five weeks as the result of a general breakdown. He was born in Trough Creek valley, Huntingdon county, on June 13, 1837, hence was within a few days of being eighty-four years old. He served during the Civil war as a member of Company E, 45th regiment, and had an enviable record. Returning from the war he located near Mt. Eagle and engaged in farming on a small scale where he lived until a few years ago. He was a member of Gregg Post No. 95, G. A. R., of Bellefonte, and of the Methodist church. Surviving him are three daughters, Mrs. Thomas Shaughnessy, of Bellefonte; Mrs. J. H. Brumbaugh and Mrs. Carrie Kuhn, of Altoona. He also leaves seventeen grandchildren and nine great grand-children. Funeral services were held in Altoona on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning the remains were taken to Curtin for burial. _____ Mary A. PHEASANT Altoona Mirror, Altoona, Pa. May 14, 1917 Wife of Joshua R. Pheasant of Mt. Eagle, Center county, died at 2.50 o'clock this morning, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Brumbaugh of 1547 Pleasant Valley road. She came to visit her daughter three weeks ago and was taken fatally ill while on the visit. She suffered from a complication of diseases. She was born Sept. 10, 1848, in Sinking valley, and was married forty years ago, on March 13, 1877, the wedding being performed in this city by Rev. W. J. Chichester, a former Presbyterian minister. She was a member of the Mt. Eagle Methodist church. Surviving are her husband and the following children: Mrs. Thomas Shaughnessey of Bellefonte, Mrs. John Brumbaugh and Mrs. Carrie Kuhn, both of this city, together with eighteen grandchildren and eight great- grandchildren and one brother, John McCormick of Hollidaysburg, and three sisters, Mrs. Levina Mathews of Hollidaysburg, Mrs. Harry M. Hileman and Mrs. Belle Hileman, both of this city. The funeral services will be held this evening at 8 o'clock at the daughter's home, with Rev. George F. Boggs, pastor of the Eighth Avenue Methodist church, officiating. The body will be taken to Mt. Eagle tomorrow morning at 11 o'clock. Interment will be made at 1.30 Wednesday afternoon. Mary R. PHEASANT Democratic Watchman, Bellefonte, Pa. May 18, 1917 Mrs. Mary R. Pheasant, wife of Joshua R. Pheasant, of Mt. Eagle, died on Sunday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Brumbaugh, on the Pleasant Valley road near Altoona. She had been ailing for some time with a complication of diseases and over three weeks ago went to visit her daughter. She grew rapidly worse and her death was the result. Her maiden name was Mary McCormick, and she was born in Sinking valley on September 10, 1848, hence was in her sixty-ninth year. Practically all her married life had been spent at Mt. Eagle. She was a member of the Methodist church for many years and a woman who was highly respected by all who knew her. She is survived by her husband, an old Civil war veteran, and the following children: Mrs. Thomas Shaughnessey, of Bellefonte; Mrs. John Brumbaugh and Mrs. Carrie Kuhn, both of Altoona. She also leaves these brothers and sisters: John McCormick, of Hollidaysburg; Mrs. Harry M. Hileman and Mrs. Belle Hileman, of Altoona, and Mrs. Levina Matthews, of Hollidaysburg. Funeral services were held at eight o'clock on Monday evening at the Brumbaugh home, by Rev. George F. Boggs, of the Methodist church, and on Tuesday morning the remains were taken to Mt. Eagle for interment. _____ Mary A. SHAUGHNESSY The Centre Democrat Mrs. Shaughnessy, 94, Succumbs in Bellefonte Bellefonte - Funeral services were held in St. John's Church August 2 for Mrs. Mary Shaughnessy, 94, known as Bellefonte's "grand old lady", who died in her home July 29 after two years' illness. Interment took place in the church cemetery. Father Phillip Saylor of Johnstown, a native of Bellefonte, who was ordained last May, was celebrant of the Requiem Mass. Mrs. Shaughnessy had known Father Saylor since his childhood, and had often expressed a wish to live to see him ordained a priest. Father Saylor also led the Rosary the night before burial. Childhood in Altoona Mrs. Shaughnessy, whose great love was her church and family, was born at Graysville, May 8, 1861, a daughter of Joshua and Angeline Benn Pheasant. She spent much of her childhood in Altoona, living in the vicinity of the Baker mansion, where she played as a child. When the mansion was opened to the public as a historical museum several years ago she was invited to act as a guide, but had to decline the invitation because of ill health. She was a charter member of Bellefonte's Court Patrick McArdle, Catholic Daughters of America, and from the days of its founding she remained a close friend of Miss Francis Maher of Kane, then state regent, and now supreme regent. Miss Maher visited Mrs. Shaughnessy May 11 of this year when a large class of candidates were initiated into the court in her home. In 1947, Mrs. Shaughnessy was named Pennsylvania Catholic Mother of the year. While not active in court work in later years, she continued her interest and was called "mother of the court". Mrs. Shaughnessy provided a basket of flowers for the guest table at the luncheon after the initiation ceremonies May 11. The deceased was the wife of Thomas N. Shaughnessy, who died in 1937, both passing away in the house they went to as bride and bridegroom. Family Survivors Of a family of four sons and four daughters, the following survive: Mrs. Blanche Heinle and Mrs. Agnes Acheson, both at home; Thomas, Overbrook; Helen, director of nurses at American Oncologic Hospital, Philadelphia; Anne, a nurse at Mt. Kisco, N.Y.; and John, Bellefonte. A sister, Mrs. Edith Brumbaugh of Altoona, also survives. _____ Thomas N. SHAUGHNESSY February 18, 1937 AGED FIRE CO. MEMBER DIES Thomas SHAUGHNESSY, 82 Charter Member of Logan Hose Company Here, Succumbs Friday at Home; Served as Court Tipstaff Thomas Nolan SHAUGHNESSY, Sr., well known resident of Bellefonte, succumbed at his home on East Howard Street on Friday morning at 2:45 o'clock of complications following an illness extending over 11 weeks. He was the son of Thomas and Alice Nolan Shaughnessy and was born in Bellefonte on April 22, 1854, making his age 82 years, 9 months and 27 days. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary PHEASANT and had he lived until the 21st of this month he and his wife would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. In addition to his wife, he leaves the following sons and daughters: Frank, of Pittsburgh; Thomas, Helen, and Anne of Philadelphia; John, of Lewistown; Mrs. Blanche Heinle, Mrs. Agnes Atchison, and Joseph at home. Two sisters, Mrs. Mary Ellen Miller, of State College, and Mrs. Alice Yost, of Erie, survive. Funeral services were held from the St. John's Catholic Church on Monday morning at 10 o'clock in charge of the Rev. Father John B. Hackett. Interment was made in the Catholic cemetery. Though living a retired life in recent years, Mr. SHAUGHNESSY was always active in his younger days. He was a carpenter by trade and was employed at the Ardel Lumber company for a number of years. He later conducted a billiard parlor and tobacco counter in the Brockerhoff block in the room now occupied by the Crossley jewelry store where he remained for many years, later moving his tables and equipment into a room in the McClain block on West High street which at that time adjoined the Moerschbacher restaurant. He was assisted in his business by his son, Joseph Shaughnessy. Shortly after Judge Fleming was inducted into office in 1928, Mr. Shaughnessy was appointed tipstaff and at the time of his death was still one of the officers at the Court House. He was the last living charter member of the Logan Fire company which was organized in 1870 and chartered after reorganization in 1872. He was an active fireman and held practically every office in the fire company from ordinary firemen to president of the company. He was a trustee and member of the Board of Control for many years. He was a life long member of the St. John's Catholic church. Deceased was well known throughout this section and will be greatly missed at the Logan Fire hall where he was a daily visitor until his recent illness. The pall-bearers were: John J. Bower, Chief Fire Marshal; Philip Saylor, Chief of the Logan Fire company; James D. Seibert, Elmer Yerger, Alexander Morrison, and George Carpeneto, former chief of the Undine Fire Company. Honorary pall-bearers were: Ambrose Smead, Philip Gross, Arthur Brown and Jack Caldwell, all members of the . . . . _____ Edith H. BRUMBAUGH February 1, 1956 Aged Resident of Pleasant Valley Expires at Home Mrs. Edith H. Brumbaugh, 87, of 1547 Pleasant Valley boulevard, oldest member of the Pleasant Valley E.U.B. church, died at her home at 9.15 o'clock this morning after an extended illness. She was born at Pennsylvania Furnace June 24, 1868, a daughter of Joshua and Anna (Benn) Pheasant, and as a child lived for a time in the Baker mansion, her father having served as a hostler for the Baker family. She married John H. Brumbaugh and they established their first home only three doors from where Mrs. Brumbaugh died. Mr. Brumbaugh died in 1942. Surviving are the following children: Mrs. Carrie Green, Mrs. Nancy Rishe, William L. and Mrs. Dora Filer, all of the city; John D. of Johnstown, Jacob of Gladstone, Mich., and Thomas of Elmira, N. Y. There are also 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Brumbaugh was the last member of her immediate family. Family will be received at the N. A. Stevens mortuary after 7 o'clock tomorrow evening. _____ John Henry BRUMBAUGH March 28, 1942 P.R.R. Veteran is Called by Death John Henry BRUMBAUGH, aged 75, of 1547 Pleasant Valley boulevard, a veteran of the Altoona works, died at his home at 5.50 o'clock this morning. Mr. Brumbaugh retired in March, 1932, as a boilermaker for the Pennsylvania railroad after forty-five years' service. He was born at Allegheny Furnace on October 28, 1866, a son of Jacob and Nancy (Davis) Brumbaugh, and had resided all his life within a radius of 100 feet in Pleasant valley. On December 22, 1887, he married Miss Edith Pheasant at her home in Mt. Eagle, Centre County. Mrs. and Mrs. Brumbaugh celebrating their fifty-fourth wedding anniversary last December. Surviving are his wife, three daughters and four sons, Mrs. Frank Green, Mrs. Nancy Rishe, Mrs. Orville Filer and William L. Brumbaugh, all of the city, John D. of Johnstown, Jacob of Royal Oak, Mich., and Thomas E. of Elmira, N.Y.; sixteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. One brother and three sisters also survive, J. M. Brumbaugh of Juniata, Mrs. Katie Templeton, Mrs. Jennie Shope and Mrs. Rose Heisler, all of Altoona. Mr. Brumbaugh was a member of the Pleasant Valley United Brethren church. Friends will be received at the N. A. Stevens mortuary after 7 o'clock this evening. _____ Clarissa G. (Pheasant) KUHN January 8, 1935 Widow of C. K. Kuhn, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Leroy Bagley, 2004 Seventh Avenue at 8.20 o'clock last night of a complication of diseases. She was born on July 12, 1872, and had resided in the city for many years. Surviving are one daughter and two sons, Mrs. Bertha Bagley of the city, J. C. and Edward Kuhn of Pittsburgh, two grandchildren, Gertrude and Melvin Kuhn, and two sisters, Mrs. John Brumbaugh of the city and Mrs. Thomas Shaughnessy of Bellefonte. Mrs. Kuhn was a member of the First Evangelical church. Funeral services will be held at the Bagley home at 7.30 o'clock Friday afternoon. Interment will be made in Oak Ridge Cemetery. _____ Cornelius K. KUHN Altoona Mirror, Altoona, Pa. April 15, 1923 C. K. Kuhn is Dead Pennsy Veteran And Tree Surgeon Expires At Home After Long Illness Cornelius K. Kuhn, noted as an authority on tree surgery and one of Altoona's best known retired Pennsylvania railroad employees, died at 2.30 o'clock yesterday morning at his residence, 2415 Fifth avenue. A complication of diseases caused his death following a year's illness. He was aged 73 years. Cornelius King Kuhn was a native of Millerstown, Pa. And was born on March 14, 1850. He came to Blair county when a young man and became engaged in farming, tilling the soil in various sections of Blair county until thirty years ago when he entered the employ of the Pennsylvania railroad company in the local shops. He was later transferred to the West Bound repair tracks in Juniata where he worked until his retirement three years ago in the capacity of storehouse attendant. He retired on age, being in his 70th year at the time. Mr. Kuhn was well versed in tree surgery and his services were in demand throughout the state. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Clarissa (Pheasant) Kuhn, and these children: Mrs. N. J. Jury, of Canton, O.; Mrs. G. R. Johnson, and Mrs. Edward Wiley of this city, and Edward, Bertha, and Joshua, at home. Six grandchildren also survive. Deceased was a member of the Evangelical church at Sixth avenue and Eleventh street. He was also affiliated with the West Bound Floral association and the Freight Shop Floral association at Fourth street, this city. The funeral will be held from the home at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Interment will be made in Oak Ridge cemetery. _____ Annie P. CALDERWOOD September 10, 1954 Mrs. Annie P. Calderwood died Sunday morning, September 10, 1954, at 1:25 o'clock at the home of Mrs. Margaret Lewis, 450 Park Avenue, Tyrone, where she resided. She was born Dec. 16, 1861, at Graysville, the daughter of Peter and Eva Pheasant Cornelius. She was twice married. First to Jacob Hendershot, who died in 1893, and secondly to James Calderwood, who died in 1938. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Edith Pruner, Collegeville, and a step-brother, Lloyd Cornelius, Altoona. She was a member of the Columbia Avenue Methodist Church of Tyrone. Funeral services were held this Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Glass funeral home in Tyrone, in charge of the Rev. Dennis Smith. Burial in Eastlawn cemetery, Tyrone. _____ Guy N. BUMGARDNER July 8, 1956 Guy N. Bumgardner of Huntingdon, Star Route, died at the J. C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon, at 5:45 p.m. Sunday, July 8, 1956. He had been in failing health for the past two years and had been hospitalized for the past 10 days. Mr. Bumgardner was born near Calvin on June 14, 1875, a son of Amon and Catharine (Pheasant) Bumgardner. He was united in marriage to Cora Querry Cree, who preceded him in death on April 19,1918. The deceased, who lived in the area his entire life, was known as a good neighbor and a kind and affectionate father. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Jasper (Thelma) Wright, Huntingdon, Star Route; one step-son, M. L. Cree, Orlando, Florida; one grandson, C. E. Chilcote, Huntingdon, Star Route; and two great-granddaughters. Funeral services will be at the late home at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 11. The Rev. Herbert A. Boyles, pastor of the Harmony Church of God, will officiate. Interment will be at Riverview Cemetery under the direction of McClain funeral service. Friends will be received at the late home after 2 p.m. Tuesday. _____ Abram Harper PHEASANT May 15, 1960 Abram Harper Pheasant of 111 (?) Ridge Street, Mount Union, died at his late home at 9 a.m. on Sunday, May 15, 1960. He had been ill for some time. He was born August 11, 1879, in Smith Valley, a son of James Franklin and Jane (Clark) Pheasant. He was twice married. He was married first to Anna M. Richardson on April 14, 1903, and she preceded him in death on July 8, 1944. He was married to Vera Mumford on March 15, 1950 at Mount Union. His wife is surviving along with one daughter, Mrs. Thomas B. (Lola) Weyant of Mount Union. There are two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mr. Pheasant was a member of the Lutheran Church of Mount Union. He was a member of the Cassville IOOF Lodge. He joined the Mount Union Fire Company in 1920 and served at the assistant fire chief for a number of years and went on the active retired list in 1947. He came to Mount Union in 1916 and was employed as a blacksmith at the Harbison-Walker Refractories for 33 years and retired in June of 1950. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday from the Clark funeral home in Mount Union. The Rev. Lawson Wright, pastor of his church, will officiate. Interment will be made in Bowman's Chapel Cemetery. There will be no viewing but friends will be received at the funeral home from 7 until 9 p.m. tonight. _____ Anna PHEASANT WRIGHT August 7, 1965 Mrs. Anna Esther Pheasant Wright, 96 years of age, formerly a resident of Mapleton Depot, R. D. died Saturday, August 7, 1965, at 10:45 a.m. at the Shirleysburg Home for the Aged. She had been in failing health for the past three months. Born September 16, 1869, in Smith Valley, she was a daughter of Samuel P. and Mary Ann (Curfman) Pheasant. She was united in marriage to Horace L. Wright on April 14, 1896. He preceded her in death in 1940. One daughter, Mary, also preceded her in death. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Sarah Lillie Apgar of Clearwater, Fla., a number of nieces and a nephew. Two brothers preceded her in death. The deceased belonged to the Bowman's Chapel Church. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 10, at 2:30 p.m. from the Bowman's Chapel Church. The Rev. Donald M. Peregoy will officiate. Interment will be made in Bowman's Chapel Cemetery. Friends may call at the McClain funeral home, Cassville after 4 p.m. today until noon on Tuesday, and then at the church after 1:30 p.m. until the hour of the services. _____ George P. CARNES September 20,1973 George P. Carnes of 1267 Blair Ave., Tyrone, died at 5:45 p.m. yesterday, September 20, 1973, at Mercy Hospital, after an extended illness. He was born August 2, 1895, at Warriors Mark Valley, a son of William and Annie (Pheasant) Carnes, and married Nellie Harris. Surviving are his wife, daughter, Mrs. Althea Woomer of Huntingdon, a stepson, Darius W. Ross of Tyrone; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mr. Carnes retired in 1957, after 43 years' service, as a freight conductor with the Pennsylvania Railroad. He was a member of the B of RT, Railroad Relief Association and the Blazing Arrow Hook & Ladder Volunteer Fire Company. Friends will be received in the Getz-Searer Funeral Home, Tyrone, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. _____ Orpha C. STEVER March 25, 2001 CASSVILLE - Orpha C. Stever, 91, formerly of HCR 02, Cassville, died at 10:05 a.m. Sunday, March 25, 2001 at Valley View Haven Nursing Home, Belleville, where she had resided for the past 4 ® years. Born October 23, 1909, in Union Township, Huntingdon County, she was a daughter of the late John M. and Elsie J. (PHEASANT) Mansberger. Her husband Fred M. Stever, whom she married Feb. 22, 1934, died Dec. 27, 1969. Surviving are: children, John M. Stever, Springfield, Mo., Fred M. Stever, Cassville, H. Ray Stever, Dillsburg and Sara Jane Marks, Mifflintown RRI; a sister, Cora David, Cassville; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Samuel P. Mansberger and a sister, Anna McHenry. She was a homemaker and was employed at the former Holiday inn, Huntingdon, at one time, and during her later years she worked as a caregiver for the elderly. She was a member of Harmony Church of God, Calvin RR, where she served as church pianist for many years. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at the Robert I. McClain Funeral Home, Cassville. Interment will be in Trough Creek Valley Baptist Cemetery, Calvin RR. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. Wednesday until the time of the service at the funeral home.
