Plummer, son of William Plummer, of this place. He was employed as a brakeman on the shifting train, and at the time of the accident was in the performance of his duties. From the information we have obtained, it appears that he had jumped off the train and turned a switch to allow the train to back on another track for the purpose of connecting with some other cars, after which he was walking backward on the track toward the place where the coupling was to be made. But after taking a few steps his foot caught in a frog when he fell on his back, and before he could extricate himself from his unpleasant position the train backing was upon him. Those on the train, as a matter of course, were unconscious of what was transpiring at the rear end of the train. His right leg was fearfully crushed and torn from the body, both thighs terribly mashed and his right arm broken at several places. He lived twenty-eight minutes after the accident occurred, and conversed up to within three minutes of his death. He expired in the arms of one of his associates on the train. He was between twenty and twenty-one years of age, and had been on the train but about two weeks. He was a member of the Young Men's Christian Association of this place, and in every respect an exemplary young man. Just entering into manhood, highly respected by all who knew him, and with bright prospects of becoming a useful citizen, the announcement of his sad and untimely death was received by our citizens with feelings of deep sorrow. His remains were interred in the cemetery at this place on Thursday morning, being followed to their last resting place by the Tyrone Fire Co., of which he was a member, and a large number of citizens.
