Carl Porta of 2905 Sixth avenue, a prominent German-American citizen and puddler at the Altoona Iron works, died at 6.30 o'clock last evening at his home of cirrhosis of the liver, after an illness of one month. He was the father of thirty children. He was born in Germany, July 28, 1845, and lived in this country for the past thirty-five years. He was a member of St. Mary's German Catholic church, of the Bavarian association, the Catholic Men's Benevolent association and the Aid association of the Altoona Iron company. He was twice married. His first helpmeet was Miss Barbara Quinn, who died twenty-seven years ago. His second wife, by whom he is survived, was Miss Mary Wolf. Of his thirty children nine have died. Those surviving are: Peter of Hazlewood, Mrs. Logan Smith of Tarentum, Pa., Mrs. Frank Logue of Wilkinsburg, Karl, George, John, Joseph, Jacob, August, Nicholas, Alphonse, William, Frank, Herman, Louis, Anthony, Stephen, Mrs. J. F. Schram, Mrs. Chester Burket, Helen and Genevieve. He also leaves forty grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Wilhelmina Hass in Germany. Mr. Porta in his youth served in the German army and fought in the Franco- Prussian war of the early seventies. The funeral will take place on Thursday morning, the cortege leaving the house at 8.30 o'clock and proceeding to St Mary's church, where requiem mass will be celebrated at 9 o'clock. Interment will be made in St. Mary's cemetery. Mr. Porta's family is one reflecting the highest credit upon him. Every one of those who have reached the age of maturity has attained success in his chosen field of labor, the most notable one being the son George, who is general foreman in the Westinghouse electrical plant at Pittsburg. A number of years ago, on entering the bonds of matrimony, the eldest son of the Porta family took as his bride the youngest sister of his step-mother, the marriage attracting considerable attention throughout the state, due to the fact that it placed the son, mother and daughter in an unusual relationship.
