Charles Howard Porter, who died of heart failure at his residence on Walnut street, Hollidaysburg, on Saturday at noon, was born in Alexandria, Huntingdon county, Pa., on May 3, 1840. After taking a business course at Franklin and Marshall college, Lancaster, Pa., he came to Hollidaysburg and engaged in the coal business in 1863. On June 7, 1864, he married Kathleen Banks, eldest daughter of Hon. Thaddeus Banks. Mr. Porter's illness was severe and brief. Only since last Tuesday he was confined to his room by an attack of neuralgia of the heart, and in spite of all the efforts of skillful physicians and efficient nursing he succumbed to a second attack on Saturday morning and passed away "to that bourne from which no traveler returns." He was a man of generous and gentle disposition; warm hearted and true in his friendship; charitable to the poor, and sympathetic to the sick and suffering. He was a member of the First Presbyterian church of Hollidaysburg, and was faithful in his attendance at all its services. He was the efficient secretary of the Blair County Agricultural society, and it was largely owing to his zealous services that the annual fairs have been such a success. He was a member of the firm of Denniston, Porter & Co., coal merchants, and after the retirement of Mr. Denniston and the death of Judge Landis, continued the business until the present time. He will be greatly missed and mourned in this community, where he has been such a prominent citizen for more than thirty years. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Milliken, of Wilmington, Del, and Mrs. Parker, of Tyrone. Altoona Tribune, Thursday, February 23, 1899
