Porter, a well known resident of the Tenth ward and janitor of the Jefferson public school building, died suddenly at his home, 208 Fourth avenue, at 4 o'clock yesterday morning of meningitis. He had been enjoying good health until Tuesday when he complained of an irritation that seemed under the scalp and this on Wednesday was discovered to be a blood clot. He took to his bed during the afternoon and grew gradually worse until he passed away. Deceased was born near Gettysburg on January 27, 1860, and was reared on a farm in Adams county. He was united in marriage to Miss Emma K. Peters at Arntzville, near Gettysburg, on May 31, 1885. He came to this city some twenty-eight years ago and had since resided here. He was for almost a quarter of a century employed as a janitor by the Altoona school district. He served for three years at the Washington building and then was transferred to the Jefferson building, Fourth avenue and Second street, where he had been located for the past twenty years. He was held in respect by the teaching corp of the school and enjoyed the friendship of all who have attended the school during his long service there. He was a member of Trinity Reformed church, was active in the work and affairs of the church and had served as a deacon for a number of years. He was held in respect and esteem by all who shared his acquaintance. He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs. Bessie Rohe, of Baltimore. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. John A. Meals, of Gettysburg, and Mrs. Daniel Fiddler, of near Gettysburg, and two grandchildren. The funeral will take place Sunday afternoon, public services to be conducted in Trinity Reformed church at 2.30 o'clock. Interment will be made in Rose Hill cemetery.
