At 11.50 o'clock, yesterday morning Andrew Purcell, Sr., one of this city's well known citizens, died at his home, 1223 Sixteenth street, of neuralgia of the stomach. He had been ailing for several months. Deceased was born at Albany, N.Y., and was in his 78th year. He came to Altoona in 1853 and later removed to Conemaugh where he resided until 1869 when he again took up his residence in this city and had resided here ever since. Mr. Purcell was one of the first engineers on the old Portage railroad and later was employed on the Pennsylvania railroad, in whose employ he remained until incapacitated by old age. He was one of the oldest members of St. John's Catholic church. He is survived by his wife and these children, all of Altoona: James M., Andrew C., Alban B., Lewis A., William F. and Anna M. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Anna Smith, of Pittsburg. The funeral will leave his late residence at 8.30 o'clock Thursday morning and proceed to St. John's Catholic church, where requiem high mass will be celebrated at 9 o'clock; interment in St. John's cemetery.
