Raugh, which sad event took place at 12 o'clock on Monday night. Mr. Raugh was born on April 24, 1844, at Alexandria, Huntingdon county, and resided there till the breaking out of the war. At the age of 17 years he enlisted, September 16, 1861, in the Fifty-third regiment, Pennsylvania volunteers, serving in Company C under Captain John Wintrode. He participated with his regiment in the battles of Seven Pines, all through the seven-days' fight, Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and at Gettysburg, where he was wounded in the arm and side on the evening of July 2, 1863. His arm was amputated close to the shoulder, and he remained in the hospital from that time until October, when he was sent to Germantown as a messenger boy, remaining there till discharged at the close of the war. He then took an agency to sell the life of Lincoln, but had not been working long when he was prostrated with a serious illness from the effects of his wounds. He came to Altoona in 1866, and received employment as watchman at the shops. Since the lower shops have been built he had been employed as chief watchman there. On the 18th of March, 1872, he was married to Miss Ellen Stahl, daughter of Mrs. George Randolph, who with three children survives him. He was a member Verandah lodge, Independent Order of Old Fellows; of Post 62, Grand Army of the Republic, and was also a member of the Second Methodist church.
