Pennsylvania Hero is Dead in Altoona 
Was Rewarded for Bravery in Stopping a Runaway Train
Altoona, Pa., Sept 15

  John Reilly, a PRR engineer, died at his home in this city this 
morning of a cancerous affliction.  He received a check for $500 and a  
gold watch from the railroad company for his good judgment and high 
sense of duty in moving his engine against a runaway train on the east 
side of the mountain May 9, 1901, and by a series of collisions, 
stopping the runaway train without derailment or loss of life.  It was 
regarded as a heroic act.
