He was born in Tyrone on April 27, 1943. John and his family lived in Oxnard, Ca., for 35 years before retiring to Las Vegas. He was a resident of Las Vegas for eight years. John was a 1961 graduate of Tyrone Area High School. Right after high school, he joined the U.S. Navy and gave 20 years superior service to his country. He was with the U.S. Fleet in the Cuban Crisis. While stationed in Port Hueneme Ca. With MCB3, he did three tours of duty in Vietnam and several tours to Okinawa and Guam. After his retirement from the service, he then joined the Von's Grocery Store Co. and retired after 10 years. His home and his heart were always opened to family and friends. Everyone could always count on a good meal and a laugh which always included an "imaginary bill for services rendered, which he was never able to collect. Up until his death, John remained keenly interested in the happiness of his grandchildren, whom very much loved and adored him. His life's center was his family and friends and occasional trips to the casinos in Las Vegas. He also loved showing family and friends a good time when they came to visit Las Vegas. His zest for living was contagious, and his outgoing personality affected the many lives he touched. He was preceded in death by his father Daniel L. Rhoades and brother Courtney M. Rhoades, both of Tyrone. John leaves a devoted family. He is survived by his mother Dorothy L. Rhoades of Tyrone, his devoted wife of 33 years Gloria Y. Herrera a native of Oxnard and now residing in Las Vegas. His two sons Richard Rhoades and wife Darlene of Las Vegas, Nv., Daniel Rhoades and wife Elvira of Oxnard, Ca., his daughter Maria H. Rhoades of Las Vegas, his six granddaughters, Karen, Gloria and Sarah all of Las Vegas and Virginia, Vanessa and Charlene all of Oxnard, Ca. and his grandson Jonathan of Las Vegas, Nv., His two brothers Barry and Mark Rhoades and his sister Brenda Black all of Tyrone. John's in-laws which should be counted as brothers and sisters, Sue and Melanie Rhoades and Mark Black all of Tyrone, Armida, Charlie and Lydia all of Las Vegas, Connie, Robert, Wally, Gilbert all of Oxnard and an assortment of nieces and nephews too numerous to count.
