Yesterday morning at 11.45 o'clock, Elwood Austin Rhodes, died in the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Rhodes, 700 Seventh avenue, Juniata. The deceased young man was stricken with typhoid fever five weeks ago and was past the critical stage of this disease when a relapse into stomach trouble caused his death. Mr. Rhodes was born in this city on January 29, 1891, but the family moved to Juniata in June of that year and Elwood spent almost his entire life in the borough. After attending the borough schools he became an employe in the H. R. Goss meat market, learning the business and showing such fidelity and business industry that he was esteemed as a valuable assistant in the place throughout his life. Elwood Rhodes was a model young man and the esteem of his relatives and employes meets with a warm concurrence on the part of all who knew him as boy or man. Six years ago he was united in marriage to Miss Verna Gibson, of Juniata Gap, and eight months ago the young wife preceded her husband to the grave. Surviving them are three little sons, Mearl, Ardale and Claire, now with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Rhodes, of Juniata and Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Gibson, of Juniata Gap. Also surviving with the bereaved parents are the following brothers and sisters of the deceased: Harry M., of Juniata; Frank M., Walter I., Paul, Robert, Marietta and Ruth, all at home. Funeral service will be held in the family home tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock and will be conducted by the Rev. Clayton Grinnell, pastor of the First Baptist church, of Altoona. Interment in Rose Hill cemetery. Altoona Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Tuesday, January 4, 1916, page 16
