He was born Aug. 7, 1881 at Tyrone, a son of Newton and Ella (Williams) Rhodes, and had been a resident of Tyrone until 1946 when he moved to Williamsburg. He was a former West Virginia Pulp and Paper company employee, retiring in 1945. He was thrice married. His first wife, the late Minnie McClellan, died in January, 1903. To this union one daughter, Mrs. Mary Rhodes Westover of Washington, D.C. survives. On May 21, 1907, he married Annie Robinson who died in December, 1926. Of this union, the following children survive: Walter and Clarence, both of Canton, Ohio; Norman, Homer, William and Elvin all of Tyrone. A step-son H. E. Robinson, also survives. His third marriage to Melissa C. Gailey, who survives, took place Dec. 3, 1934, at Hollidaysburg. Also surviving are three brothers: Ralph of Washington, D.C., Samuel and Fred, both of Tyrone.
