Rhodes, of Hollidaysburg, Is Fatally Hurt Near Portage VICTIM WAS RUN DOWN BY TRAIN 13 John R. Rhodes, aged 36, of Garber and Edgar streets, Hollidaysburg, a Pennsy freight engineer, was struck and fatally injured at 3:45 o'clock yesterday afternoon near Portage, by Fast Mail, No. 13, while he was oiling his engine. Rhodes' train, extra 2850, was running eastward on No. 2 track, but had stopped at NY tower, near Portage, on the Pittsburg division, to take water. The engineman stepped from the cab and was engaged in oiling the locomotive when the express train, running late, approached at high speed on No. 3 track, westbound. Rhodes was caught without warning and his body was struck and hurled a considerable distance. Trainmen hastily went to the injured man, picked him up and placed him aboard No. 13 and took him to a Johnstown hospital, where he died a short time after being admitted. His skull was fractured, but his body was not badly mutilated. John R. Rhodes was born in Huston township, this county, June 30, 1880, and was the son of John and Anna Rhodes, the former being deceased. He became a Pennsy employe at the age of 19 and served the company ever since. He was an extra engineer for nine years and lately promoted to the freight service. He wedded Miss Anna Shiffler, of this city, a number of years ago. She survives with two sons, George M. and John R., jr. His mother also survives. She made her home with her son. Rhodes was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Enginemen & Fireman and the P.R.R. Relief association. The body was brought to this city by Funeral Directors Hickey & O'Neill and yesterday afternoon was removed to his home, where funeral services will be held at a time to be announced later. Rhodes, of Hollidaysburg, will be held at his home, Garber and Edgar streets, at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon.
