Richards, age 94, of 442 W. 15th Street, Tyrone, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006 at 7:30 a.m. at the Tyrone Hospital. He was born Feb. 18, 1912 in Mill Creek, the son of George W. and Alice E. Devine and on June 14, 1945 was married to Caroline B. Beck who preceded him in death on Sept. 27, 2003. He is survived by two children- Lynn Richards of Loma Linda, CA and C. Anita, wife of Bill Ellenberger III of Tyrone and one grandson, Aaron D. Ellenberger of Escondido, San Diego County, CA. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Susan B. Lang of Sun City West, AZ and Marian Richards of Tyrone. He was preceded in death by two brothers - Dale and Glenn and a daughter-in-law, Flo Richards. He was the last of his immediate family. Mr. Richards was a member of the Grace Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Tyrone High School Class of 1930. He attended Juniata College and received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Penn State University and did further graduate study at Penn State, which led to a real estate license. He, at one time, had served as an elder and clerk of session of the First Presbyterian Church of Tyrone, an elder of the Independent Bible Church of Altoona, and as a deacon and treasurer of the Grace Baptist Church. He was actively involved in the children's program at Grace Baptist Church through Awana (he performed gospel magic at various churches through the medium of ventriloquism and puppetry, an accomplishment he perfected at age 75). He was a former member of the original Tyrone Players and had taught for a number of years at the Altoona Bible Institute. Mr. Richards retired in 1971 from Westvaco as a chemist and had worked during World War II at Fort Belvoir, VA under contract with the government on water purification through the medium of carbon research. Funeral service for Mr. Richards will be held Friday, Aug. 25, 2006 at 11 a.m. at the Grace Baptist Church with Pastor Roy Garthwaite officiating with burial at Blair Memorial Park. Friends may call at the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home Inc. on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and on Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.
