All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/blair/ _______________________________________________ JOHN RILEY, The Eighth avenue confectioner and tobacconist, died of cancer of the stomach and liver at the Medico Chirurgical hospital in Philadelphia, at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon. He had been ill for three months. Three weeks ago he went to Philadelphia. An operation was performed, but failed, as the disease had progressed too far. The deceased was born near Boalsburg, Centre county, in June 1841. He grew to manhood there, coming to Altoona in 1889. Previous to this time he spent some years in the west, following the occupations of painter and school teacher. He opened his store at 1521 Eighth avenue in 1890. During the year 1886 he was married to Miss Mary Kiefer, who with one child, Joseph, survives. The following brothers and sisters are also yet living: Captain William N. Riley, of Dayton, O.; ex- Judge Thomas F. Riley and Calvin Riley, of Centre county; Mrs. Ed Cramer of Johnstown; Mrs. Sarah Rankin, of Centre county; Mrs. J. G. Irvin, of Oak Hall, and Mrs. A. J. Everhart, of this city. Mr. Riley was a member of the Second Presbyterian church. He was a veteran of the late war, having served from 1862 to 1865 in company G, One Hundred and Forty-eighth regiment, Pennsylvania volunteers. He was also a member of Centennial castle, Knights of the Golden Eagle; Blair lodge No. 281, Knights of Pythias, an the Royal Arcanum. The remains will arrive in this city this evening on fast line and will be removed to his late home on Eighth avenue. On Saturday at 12 o'clock services will be conducted at the house by Rev. Henry Howard Stiles, a pastor of the Second Presbyterian church. The remains will be taken to Birmingham on the 2:10 train and interred in the Birmingham Presbyterian cemetery.
