RILING DIED IN SNOW Body Was Discovered Along Road Side Near Glen White--Victim of Heart Disease. While returning from the Litzinger coal bank near Glen White, about 12 o'clock this forenoon, Millard F. Riling, a dairyman and truck farmer residing on the Riling homestead, a mile beyond Eldorado, fell over dead in the snow along side of the road, a victim of heart disease. News of the death did not reach the city until about 1 o'clock this afternoon and then it was some time before it was definitely established that the dead man was Mr. Riling. The man's body was discovered along the roadside about a quarter of a mile on this side of the mine, being on his homeward way when he was stricken. The teamster who found him, turning his horses back, drove to the offices of the Glen White coal and coke company, a half mile distant, and informed the bookkeeper, James Gilson of the said affair. Mr. Gilson immediately called up Mayor Hoyer on the telephone and apprised him of the matter. Coroner Blackburn was also notified. Riling's team was standing in the middle of the road with the dead body lying near. The Glen White people had no definite knowledge of the man's identity beyond the fact that his name was Riling or Reilly and that he was from Eldorado. Mayor Hoyer at once called up the supposed dead man's brother at Eldorado, W.B. Riling, and an investigation was started to ascertain if Millard F. Riling was the man. An adopted daughter, Edna Brubaker, aged 13, was in school at Eldorado and from her it was learned that he foster father had left his home early in the morning for the coal mines. In the meantime Mr. Myers, the Eldorado florist, hurriedly hitching up a sleigh, drove to the Riling homestead to investigate. From the tracks found in the snow Mr. Riling had stopped his team when about a quarter of a mile from the mine and going ahead a short distance had returned to the side of his sled, where he dropped in the snow, apparently expiring suddenly. Upon the advice of Mayor Hoyer, the body was placed in the sled, which was driven to one side of the road to permit teams to pass. Mr. Riling during the past few days had been feeling unwell, but his disposition was not looked upon with any alarm. Saturday he was in attendance at the Green avenue market and had partially arranged with his cousin, Mrs. Mary Curtis, to attend the funeral of Martin Turnbaugh of Antis township, a relative, which took place yesterday, but stated that, owing to his feeling unwell, he would not go. Millard F. Riling was about 53 years of age. He was a life-long resident of Logan township. His widow and a number of adopted children survive. Among the sisters and brothers who survive are W.B. of Eldorado, John of Eighth avenue and Seventh street, Mrs. William Metzgar and Mrs. David Yon, also of this city. Coroner Blackburn left for the scene of death late this afternoon. Altoona Mirror, 18 January 1909, p. 1, col. 2 _______ MRS. CLARA I.
