Rodgers, age 86, of 1118 Poplar Avenue, Tyrone died early Tuesday morning, Dec. 9, 2003, at his home. He was born on May 28, 1917, in Tyrone, the son of William H. and Kathryn Fleck Rodgers. On Dec. 20, 1948 he married Elizabeth (Betty) Getz, who survives him. Also surviving are a daughter, Catherine E. Rodgers, of Altoona; a son, William Getz Rodgers and wife Kathy of Carlisle; a daughter, Ann Rodgers Brown of Yardly and three granddaughters; Katy Brown, Allison and Laura Rodgers. Mr. Rodgers was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Eugene H. Rodgers. He was a graduate of the Tyrone High School class of 1936. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II, having left Tyrone with the 140th Calvary Reconnaissance Troop Mechanized and was discharged on Dec. 8, 1945. Mr. Rodgers was one of the first employees of the Chicago Rivet Company in Tyrone and retired after 22 years of employment. He was a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church and was a past member of the Board of Deacons. Bill was an outstanding athlete, playing basketball in high school; was a PA state horseshoe pitching champion in his teens; was a baseball pitcher for many local teams where he was given the nickname "Dickie." Bill was one of the first persons to bowl a perfect 300 game at West End Lanes, and later became an accomplished golfer at Sinking Valley Country Club. Funeral services for Mr. Rodgers will be held Friday, Dec. 12, 2003 at 2 p.m. at the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home Inc. with Rev. Robert Dunkleberger officiating. Interment will be made in East Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Contributions in Mr. Rodgers memory may be given to the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 102 W. 13th St., Tyrone, Pa. 16686.
