He Passes Away and Joins the Great Majority. DIED AT 8 O'CLOCK LAST EVENING His Illness Dated From December of Last Year When He Was Injured by a Fall - Was in His Seventy-Sixth Year. Dr. S. M. Ross, one of the city's oldest and most widely known physicians, died at his home, No. 1218 1/2 Twelfth avenue, of paresis at 8 o'clock last evening. His illness dates from last December, when he was somewhat injured in a fall down the stairway of the Phoenix block. He had partially recovered from this, however, when on May 4 last, he was run down by a delivery wagon on Twelfth avenue, sustaining a fracture of the thigh. He was removed to his home and given the best possible treatment, but the age of the patient was unfavorable to recovering, he being seldom able to move from his bed. Paresis finally overwhelmed the sufferer and mercifully closed his days of anguish. Dr. Samuel McNutt Ross was born at Indiana, Pa., November 7, 1821, and he was therefore nearly 76 years of age. He was educated at the Indiana academy, an institution noted for the famous men it has turned out. After leaving the academy he entered Jefferson Medical college, from which he was graduated in 1850. After completing his medical studies Dr. Ross practiced two years in Williamsburg, this county, after which he removed to Beaver county, where he practiced until 1875, when he located permanently in this city. Since that time he has been one of the best known and largest practitioners in the city, where he leaves a host of friends. December 24, 1852, Dr. Ross was married in Williamsburg to Miss Kate Spear who, with one son, Dr. W. S. Ross, of this city, and two daughters, Miss Maggie at home and Mrs. C. M. Mendenhall, of Wilmington, Del., survives. Two brothers are also yet living: Dr. John D. Ross, of Williamsburg, and Joseph Ross, of Poland, O. Dr. Ross has been a member of the American and State Medical societies since 1864, and was until a few years ago a member of the Blair County Medical society. He was also, until a few years ago, an active member on the Altoona hospital staff, but failing health caused him to relinquish these duties. He was, however, until the time of his death, consulting physician on the hospital staff. The deceased was prominently identified with the Second Presbyterian church congregation, having been a member since 1875. He had been for many years one of the elders of the church. Though never an aspirant for any political office he always took a deep interest in the local and national politics and never neglected an opportunity to register his opinion at the polls. The final arrangements for the funeral have not been completed, though it is known that the interment will be made in Fairview cemetery, where a son of the deceased is buried.
