Ruggles Was Run Down at Fifth Street, While Crossing the Tracks. W. F. Ruggles, of 805 Fifth street, was instantly killed in the yard, at Fifth street, at 5:30 o'clock this morning, while crossing the tracks. The unfortunate man lives with his mother. This morning he rose and, without saying where he was going, went out of the house. He walked to the railroad and attempted to cross the tracks. Engine 420 was backing up the yard. He evidently didn't notice its approach and the engineer didn't see him. He didn't even notice that he had run over him and went ahead with his engine. Ruggles was but in two at the waist and had a terrible gash in the side of his head when he was picked up. The body was noticed by some brakemen a few minutes after the accident, but no one was an eye witness to the tragedy. He was only away from the house five minutes when his people were told of his death in the yard. The deceased was born at Duncansville and was aged 42 years. He came to this city with his parents when a boy and had lived at 805 Fifth street for twenty-two years past. He is unmarried and is survived by his aged mother, Mrs. Nancy Ruggles, and by one brother, Loenard [sic] L. Ruggles, foreman of the Hackensack shops in Jersey city. He worked in the bolt shop as a machinist. He was a member of the P.R.R. Voluntary Relief and of the Jr. O.U.A.M. Mr. Ruggles was well known and much esteemed by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. Coroner McCartney is investigating the affair, but it is not likely than an inquest will be held. The funeral arrangements will not be made until the arrival of his brother, on fast line this evening. Altoona Mirror, Thursday, August 31, 1899, page 1 Note: William F.
